Wading pools, spray parks and outdoor pools

Wading pools, spray parks and outdoor pools

Beat the heat and enjoy the summer weather in Calgary by visiting one of our many wading pools, spray parks and outdoor pools around the city. Spray parks, wading pools and outdoor pools are typically open from mid-June until fall (weather dependent). Aquatic wheelchairs are now available at some spray parks.

Wading pools and spray parks are not available to be booked.

Love the water? The City also runs several indoor pools and leisure centres throughout Calgary.

Why are spray parks and wading pools sometimes closed (temporarily) during the season?

To maintain healthy pool water at City spray parks and wading pools, the water is regularly monitored and water samples submitted as required to ensure we are operating within regulatory parameters throughout the season. If a test indicates that the water is no longer meeting regulatory standards, we shut down the amenity, investigate the cause, address the issue (which can involve thorough cleaning and the addition of necessary chemicals to the water) and re-test the water. Once we receive a water test that indicates that the facility is meeting Alberta Health Services standards, then we re-open the facility.

Why do spray parks and wading pools open around mid-June each year?

Spray parks and wading pools open in the summer instead of spring for several reasons. Despite being winterized each fall, these outdoor facilities are directly exposed to the freeze/thaw cycle of Calgary's harsh winter weather. Once the ground thaws, crews inspect each spray park and wading pool and require time to complete any repairs before opening for the season. Crews start filling the systems with water after repairs are complete. This step can reveal if there are any additional repairs needed. Once a spray park or wading pool is running normally, pool chemicals are added, and the water is heated. Finally, Alberta Health Services completes site inspections, and the water quality is tested to make sure spray parks and wading pools meet regulatory health and safety standards prior to opening for the season.

Outdoor pools in Calgary

Hours of operation vary by location and may be affected by inclement weather. Outdoor pools are independently managed by Calgary Outdoor Swimming Pools Association and typically open annually from Father's Day weekend to the end of August.

Aquatic wheelchairs

Aquatic wheelchairs are available in spray parks at Prairie Winds Park, Variety Park in South Glenmore Park and Somerset Park. These wheelchairs will be available until the spray park closes this fall (weather dependent). Visitors can sign out the wheelchair, upon availability, by approaching the attendant on site at the park.

Visitors are welcome to use the wheelchair for as long as they require; no deposit is required. Please be respectful if there are others waiting to use the wheelchair. While visitors are using aquatic wheelchairs, they can choose to keep their personal chair in the spray park storage area or keep their chair with them.
