Calgary Conversations Podcast: Building the Green Line

Green Line Director Wendy Tynan joined the Calgary Conversation podcast to break down where construction of the much-anticipated line is at and the mammoth undertaking to deliver such an important part of Calgary’s transit future.

“It's the largest infrastructure investment and largest LRT construction that the city has ever undertaken,” said Tynan.

In June of last year, ground was broken on the $6.248 billion project that is funded by The City, The Province of Alberta and the Government of Canada. The initial stage of the line will go from Shepard to the Event Centre/Grand Central Station and is expected to open in 2031.

“We have construction underway in five locations in the southeast and we'll be awarding all of the rest of our contracts this year. So it's exciting,” said Tynan.

Tynan also walks through the major events in the Green Line’s 15-year history, what makes the Green Line trains unique and discusses the current engagement taking place over the downtown alignment of the new line.

While work is well underway on Phase 1 of the Green Line, Tynan said the long-term vision of the Green Line from Seton in the deep southeast all the way to 160 Avenue N in Keystone is alive and well and supported by all three levels of government.
