It's official: the Downtown Segment is approved!

This is the moment we've been building toward! On September 22, Council approved a surface route for the Downtown Segment of the Green Line LRT, connecting the Event Centre/Grand Central Station to a new at-grade station on 10 Avenue near 2 Street SW.

Questions we've been getting about the Downtown Segment

Where will the downtown LRT station be?

It will be on 10 Avenue near 2 Street SW.

How will Green Line riders connect to the existing Red and Blue Lines?

Connections will be made from the station into the Plus 15 network or by walking north on 1 Street SW to the existing Red and Blue Line LRT stations.

How will the 2 Street SW station connect to the Plus 15 network?

We’re working on the specific details as part of the next stage of design. We’ll share them with you as soon as we can.

Will the Green Line cross the CPKC tracks?

No, this route stays clear of the CPKC corridor entirely, keeping things simple and efficient.

What happens at Macleod Trail and 1 Street SE?

An important question! We're exploring the best options for these intersections and overall mobility in the area as part of the next phase of design and will share more as that takes shape.

Building today while planning for tomorrow

This is just the beginning. Council also greenlit the next steps for the planning and budgeting for the south and north extensions of the Green Line LRT project, growing our vision for a more connected Calgary.

We're back in front of Executive Committee on November 3, 2026, with updates on:

• Budget requirements for planning and design on the south extension and north corridor
• Information on the MAX Green BRT program, including capital cost estimates
• Planning and cost estimates for a downtown BRT loop/station

This is what progress looks like. From construction already underway in the southeast to the Downtown Segment now locked in. This approval marks the final step needed to deliver Phase 1 of the Green Line LRT for Calgarians.
