The Missing Piece of the Parcel

Heather supports community association managers who oversee properties across Calgary and nearby communities, including Airdrie. Her role requires a thorough understanding of the key details and uniques features of each property her company manages. Many of these are linked to Alberta land titles, records and data.

Airdrie’s Data Services had already helped Heather find solutions for her work, which sparked her interest in exploring whether the City of Calgary offered similar support. A simple search brought her to Calgary’s Open Data Portal where she found information to help her day-to-day responsibilities, such as property research, ownership verification, document filing and document registration request (DRR) activities.

The Current Year Property Assessments (Parcel) dataset has since become an important part of Heather’s daily work. Recently, the dataset was enhanced with additional information reflecting the legal descriptions of properties, including their plan, block, and lot details; the legal descriptions of properties. Users can now find more property information in one place and use the dataset for more everyday tasks.

“Once I found the right information on the City’s website, the Open Data team quickly connected me with the resources I needed. They even provided interim information while the requested enhancement was being developed. When the update was completed, they personally reached out to let me know it was available.”

Heather’s experience shows how open data can help with tasks beyond its traditional uses. The City’s Open Data Portal does more than store raw information. It is a practical business tool that helps people make decisions, solve problems in their daily work and find value in unexpected ways.

“The combination of a great tool and excellent customer service made this a very positive experience. I'm proud to share an example of how The City's Open Data program creates real value for users in our community.”

Heather’s story is a reminder that the best uses of open data often start with a simple question.
