Frequently asked questions about street light repairs

How do I report a street light outage?

Reporting has never been easier, or faster! Enter the address or find the light on the outage map. Click the light and select the issue: out, flickering, or on during daylight. If you’re unsure of the exact streetlight, you can indicate this in the street light location selection on the map.

How long does it take for a street light outage to be repaired?

We aim to fix reported streetlight outages within 30 days. During winter months, we get more reports because of longer nights, and weather can slow things down. If civil work is needed - like digging or wiring - the repair may take longer. Our crews and partners work hard to get lights back on as soon as possible.

How do I know if my report has been seen?

Once a streetlight is fixed, the icon on the map changes from red (reported) to green (repaired). Click the icon for more details, including any repair complications.

Can I get updates on my streetlight outage report?

You sure can! When reporting, simply log in to the Streetlight Outage Map with your myID account. Linking your reports using your myID account will allow you to search outages you have reported and receive repair status updates. If you reported your outage anonymously, the most up-to-date information is available on the street light outage map. Due to the volume of street light reports that we receive, we’re unable to provide information on a case-by-case basis.

Why is the light I reported taking so long to get fixed?

Some streetlight repairs take longer if the problem is underground. Complex issues may need a new design and major work like digging or rewiring. These repairs take more time to plan and complete.

What if the streetlight I reported is still out after 30 days?

If a streetlight has been out for more than 30 days, you can escalate the issue directly on the map or by contacting 311.

Can I report a downed pole or physical damage on the outage map?

Not yet. Please submit a 311 online service request to report physical damage.

How do I request a new streetlight installation?

Requests for new streetlight installations, brightness adjustments, or other general inquiries must be submitted through 311. Please use the 311 Online Service Request and select "Streetlight - General Inquiry" to submit your request.

What should I do if the outage map isn’t working for me?

If you're experiencing issues with the map, try refreshing the page or using a different browser or device. If the issue continues, please call 311.

Who maintains the streetlights in Calgary?

The City of Calgary maintains most streetlights along city roads. Some lights on provincial highways or private roads within the city limits are handled by external partners.
