Emergency access lanes
Whether on public roads or on private property, a fire lane (or emergency access lane) is a path of egress reserved for emergency access.
The primary purpose of a fire lane is to allow a continuous path of travel for emergency personnel and their equipment from any point of a building or structure. A secondary benefit of a fire lane is to improve both pedestrian safety and traffic circulation.
The Calgary Fire Department may require and designate public or private fire lanes as deemed necessary for the efficient and effective use of fire apparatus.
Designated fire lanes shall be identified by posting signs that identify a particular path of egress, and shall be maintained free of obstructions and vehicles. The building representative shall be responsible for keeping the fire lane free of obstructions.
