Halloween Safety

Halloween is the time of year when all the little ghosts and ghouls get to dress up. They wander through Calgary’s neighbourhoods, knocking on doors and collecting treats. It can be very fun, as long as it’s a safe experience. We have put together safety information to help you and your trick-or-treaters stay safe on Halloween.

Partners for Safety

For almost 30 years the Calgary Partners for Safety, coordinated by Calgary’s Child Magazine, have worked together to keep Halloween safe and fun for everyone. The partners include the Calgary Police Service, Emergency Medical Services,  Calgary 9-1-1, Calgary Fire Department, Calgary Transit and Bylaw Services.

Fire, Police and EMS will patrol various streets on October 31st to offer assistance to anyone who needs it.

Fire stations will be open as safe places for anyone needing help.

Please call 9-1-1 in the event of an emergency or if you are in need of help.

Halloween tips for trick-or-treaters and their parents

  • Wear a bright costume with reflector tape to be more visible to drivers.
  • Make sure costumes are not highly flammable and don’t interfere with easy walking.
  • Use face paint instead of masks. If children are wearing masks, make sure the masks don’t interfere with their vision.
  • Trick-or-treat while it’s still light outside.
  • Younger children should be accompanied by an adult. Older kids who are mature enough to be unsupervised should travel in a group.
  • Help kids plan a route and set a time to be home.
  • Never go beyond a home’s doorway and don’t talk to strangers.
  • Stay on the sidewalk and only cross the street at intersections.
  • Don’t take shortcuts through alleys and abandoned areas; stay in populated, well-lit areas.
  • Carry a flashlight and a cell phone, if possible.
  • Have an adult inspect the candy before eating any treats.

Halloween tips for homeowners

  • Ensure your front entrance is well-lit to welcome trick-or-treaters. Turn on your porch light to let children know they’re welcome.
  • Keep front lawns and pathways clear of obstacles.
  • Make sure pets are contained and keep them away from the front entrance.
  • Avoid using real candles; consider using battery-operated candles or glow sticks.

Halloween tips for drivers

  • Slow down and be extra cautious in residential areas.
  • Drive defensively - expect children to dart out from between parked cars.
  • Watch carefully for people using pedestrian crossings.
