Boil Water Advisory lifted for communities of Silverado, Yorkville and Belmont
Following the Boil Water Advisory being lifted for Silverado on June 3, 2023, Alberta Health Services (AHS) has lifted the Boil Water Advisory for the communities of Yorkville and Belmont.
Testing has confirmed that water in the three communities meets all water quality guidelines and standards and is safe for normal consumption.
What residents and businesses need to do
Residents and businesses within the affected area can safely use the water as normal after taking some important steps:
- Household faucets: Turn on all taps and flush water lines for at least 20 minutes. Wash tap aerators and screens in hot soapy water then disinfect them for ten minutes in a solution of one part bleach to nine parts water.
- Refrigerators with water and ice dispensers, water coolers, filters and automatic ice makers: Read and follow the manufacturer’s instructions for flushing, cleaning, and sanitizing. Run water for 20 minutes before using the water.
- Hot water tank: Drain and refill hot-water tanks that are set below 45ºC (normal setting is 60ºC).
- Water softener: Run water softeners through a regeneration cycle. Follow the instructions from the manufacturer.
Thank you for your patience and cooperation during this time.
Frequently asked questions
Why was the boil water advisory issued?
On the afternoon of June 1, a watermain break caused water to be lost to large parts of Silverado, Yorkville and Belmont. While the watermain repair was completed within hours and initial tests met water quality parameters, the extent of the depressurization was unknown. As a precautionary measure, just before midnight on June 1, Alberta Health Services ordered The City to issue a boil water advisory to the three communities.
