Required Qualifications to Install and Maintain Life Safety Equipment

If you install, repair or maintain life saving equipment such as fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems and fire alarms, you must be able to prove that you have the skills, competencies and standards of performance to work in Alberta.

If you hire a contractor or company to do this work, you must check their qualifications to do so.

Each person providing these services must carry, on their person, a card that proves their certifications and qualifications. Please check the necessary minimum qualifications for a tradesperson to work on each piece of equipment, plus information on how to check their credentials.

Please click here for information on the necessary service provider qualifications for the verification, installation, inspection and maintenance of the following fire protection and life safety systems:

Special fire suppression systems:

  • portable fire extinguishers
  • fire alarm and voice communication systems
  • sprinkler systems

This also provides guidance regarding the qualifications of service providers for the cleaning of commercial cooking equipment exhaust systems and certification of contractors that conduct installations, removals, maintenance, and repairs of aboveground and underground storage tank systems.
