Life Safety Equipment Required Qualifications to Install and Maintain

If you install, repair or maintain lifesaving equipment such as fire extinguishers, sprinkler systems and fire alarms, you must be able to prove that you have the skills, competencies and standards of performance to work in Alberta.​

If you hire a contractor or company to do this work, you must check their qualifications to do so.​​​​​​​

Each person providing these services must carry, on their person, a card that proves their certifications and qualifications. Please see below for the necessary minimum qualifications for a tradesperson to work on each piece of equipment, plus information on how to check their credentials.​​

Special Fire Suppression Systems

In order to install special fire suppression systems a person must have:

  • A certificate of training from the manufacturer.

In order to perform maintenance on a special fire suppression system a person must have:

  • An approved certificate of training from a public post-secondary educational institution OR
  • A certificate of training from the manufacturer.

To check your tradesperson’s qualifications to work on your fire suppression system, please email credentials.transcripts@sait.ca if they trained at the Southern Alberta Institute of Technology (SAIT) or firecourses@lakelandcollege.ca if they trained at Lakeland College

If they have a certificate of training from a manufacturer, please contact the relevant company.

Portable Fire Extinguishers

In order to install, test or perform maintenance a person must:

  • Hold an approved certificate of training from a public post-secondary educational institution AND
  • Own or be employed by an agency that is certified annually by a recognized certification body as being compliant with CAN/ULC-S532 'Regulation of the Servicing of Portable Fire Extinguishers'

Fire Alarm and Voice Communication Systems

In order to install, test or perform maintenance a person must hold an approved certificate of training from:

Sprinkler Systems

To install, alter, test or perform maintenance on automatic fire sprinkler systems to NFPA 13, a person must have acquired a Journeyperson’s certificate of training as a Sprinkler Fitter.

Persons are considered qualified in the inspection, testing and maintenance of automatic fire sprinkler systems installed to NFPA 13, 13R and 25 when they have acquired:

  • A Journeyperson’s certificate of training as a Sprinkler Fitter OR
  • An approved certificate of training in the testing and maintenance of automatic fire sprinkler systems.

Commercial Cooking Equipment Exhaust Systems

To perform maintenance on commercial cooking equipment exhaust systems, a person must have a certificate verifying that they have completed an approved course of training in duct-cleaning procedures.
