In 2008, The City of Calgary Recreation commissioned the Recreation Amenities Gap Analysis Studies (RAGA) to identify the recreation and leisure needs of Calgarians and determine if new recreation facilities may be required.

Conducted in two phases (parts I and II), the RAGA studies surveyed 6,024 households in twelve study areas. In addition, interviews were conducted with community leaders and various segments of the population. The results provide valuable information concerning the leisure and recreation preferences and participation patterns of Calgarians, their satisfaction with current leisure and recreation opportunities, and perceived amenity gaps.

The full Recreation Amenities Gap Analysis Report is available to review. The study gives a view to Calgary’s needs and preferences on a larger regional scale informing aspects of the Recreation Master Plan and recreation capital development including Municipal Sustainability Initiative funding and new recreation facility development underway. The information from RAGA can be of use in providing guidance for further strategic needs and preference work by community associations, social recreation groups and other external stakeholders.
