Public Art 101: Workshops for Artists

Are you an artist or member of a community group interested in creating a public art project, but you’re not sure where to start?

Calgary Arts Development is hosting free monthly Public Art 101 workshops. These in-person workshops will cover different aspects of the public art process.

Each workshop is hosted by Dawn Van de Schoot, a consultant and project manager with more then 17 years experience in public art. The topics are developed based on requests from the community and are intended to demystify the public art process in all phases of development.

Sessions are free with registration and open to all who are interested in attending. Each session will have a formal presentation, time for Q&A and an informal networking session afterwards. The presentations will be recorded and available for viewing online afterwards.

Microgrant applications now open for Calgary artists

Bring your idea for a new arts and culture experience to life! With close to $1 million in available funding, the 2024 Arts and Culture Microgrant is now accepting applications.

Non-profits and registered charities, including Community Associations and Business Improvement Areas, can apply for up to $30,000 in funding to celebrate arts and culture and activate culturally vibrant neighbourhoods in Calgary. Local artists are invited to partner with one of these organizations to create an initiative.

To qualify, initiatives must enhance cultural learning and arts appreciation. Activity ideas could include pop-up music events, cultural cooking workshop, drumming workshop, artisan markets, interactive artwork and installations, cultural festivals, recreational art studios, shared maker spaces, theatre production, light show, cultural film screening, art exhibition showcasing local artists or another creative idea you have.

Memorial Parkway Program to be art inspired

Thank you to everyone who took the time to submit an application to join The City of Calgary’s design team for the Memorial Parkway Program. Applications are now closed. An independent selection committee will review the applications and an artist(s) will be selected and announced in the coming weeks.

The selected artist(s) will join the City of Calgary's design team as they upgrade infrastructure along Memorial Drive, potentially integrating public artworks into the flood barrier or nearby pathway system - or developing public art concepts for multiple opportunities along the north bank of the Bow River.

The mandate of this initiative is to deliver expansive placemaking opportunities for the living memorial, the Sunnyside Flood Barrier project and Memorial Drive.
