Project summary
We are replacing the sidewalk on the south side of 34 Avenue S.W. (from 17 Street to 14 Street) with a new 3-metre-wide multi-use pathway. This pathway will connect with the path on the south side of 34 Avenue, that is currently being built as part of the Marda Loop Main Streets project. When finished, it will give residents and visitors a safe and accessible space for walking and wheeling through the community.
Project design
- The pathway was identified as a gap in the larger network of pathways. Connecting this corridor will complete the network. See the Calgary Transportation Plan for more details.
- It follows the guidelines set out in the 5A Network Guiding Principles Report.
- The project aligns with the Streetscape Master Plan for Marda Loop. It was created using feedback from residents, technical analysis, and budget considerations.
Project benefits
- Enhanced Safety: The wider pathway will reduce conflicts between people walking and wheeling.
- Improved Connectivity and Accessibility: It will provide a seamless route along 34 Avenue S.W. for people who walk and wheel. Lowered curbs at intersections will help people with mobility aids, strollers, and bikes.
- Boosts Local Economy: It will attract more visitors and shoppers to the community, supporting local businesses and economic growth.

Frequently asked questions
What is a multi-use pathway?
A multi-use path is a shared path for people walking and wheeling (bikes, wheelchairs, scooters etc.).
Why are you building a multi-use pathway on 34 Avenue S.W.?
During our public engagement sessions, residents said they wanted safer, easier, and more connected ways to travel in the area. We also heard that preserving on-street parking is a high priority for the community.
The new multi-use pathway will provide a safer, easier and more connected route for travel through the community. It will also keep parking available on both sides of 34 Avenue S.W.
Who can use the multi-use pathway?
The City of Calgary's multi-use pathways are designed for everyone to enjoy! These pathways are open to all Calgarians and visitors for activities such as walking, running, cycling, in-line skating, and using mobility devices like wheelchairs.
For more information on what modes of transportation are allowed where, please refer to this guide.
Will any lanes of traffic or parking be removed to build the new pathway?
The project won't permanently remove any traffic lanes or street parking. During construction, there may be temporary on-street parking restrictions, temporary lane closures and detours.
Will any trees be removed?
The project team is committed to preserving the neighborhood's tree canopy as much as possible. We are working closely with Parks’ Urban Forestry and Conservation team to assess the impact on local trees. Removing a tree is always a last resort. Because the sidewalk is being widened, a few trees will likely need to be removed.
Will the current Enmax poles along the south side of 34 Avenue S.W. need to be moved?
Many of the Enmax poles along the south side of 34 Avenue lie in the path of the new multi-use pathway. They will need to be moved to the property lines to keep the route clear and accessible for everyone. Depending on the construction schedule and site conditions, these poles may be removed before, during, or after the pathway construction.
Was any engagement done on this project?
Public engagement on 34 Avenue cycle amenities took place throughout 2021. Key takeaways can be found in the What We Heard Report. More information on Main Streets - 33/34 Avenues S.W. engagement can be found here.
