Kabaddi at Hopewell Field
The Hopewell Field at 4410 27 St. N.E. in the community of Horizon is being upgraded to support Kabaddi and will be exclusively reserved for Kabaddi tournaments, which are large, international events. Other sport teams may use the field on a drop-in basis but cannot pre-book, as Kabaddi tournament dates are typically confirmed only 1–2 weeks in advance by the International Kabaddi Federation.
Due to this unique usage model, a new booking process and fee structure is required.
Facility Rental Fee
For the 2025 season only, Kabaddi will be charged the “regular” green space booking fee of $66.24/day (including set-up and take down days) plus an admin fee of $25.25/permit and a risk administration fee of $5.75/permit.
Please note:
Starting next year, a higher booking fee will be applied to Kabaddi tournaments at Hopewell Field to more accurately reflect the exclusive reservation rights granted, as well as the unique fee structure associated with commercial events.
Security Requirements
The City will require that six certified security personnel be on site at each event, contracted from a licensed security company. Proof of contract must be provided prior to booking. Calgary Police Services support this revised approach and will be notified of all upcoming tournaments.
Other Requirements
As with all large events, Kabaddi tournament organizers must meet the following requirements:
- Liability Insurance: Provide proof of $5 million liability insurance, naming The City of Calgary as an additional insured. The named insured must match the event applicant and may be an individual or an organization.
- Site Plan: Submit a detailed site plan showing the layout of the tournament field, tents, portable toilets, food trucks, waste/recycling stations, and muster point. Once the site is fully developed, a standard plan may be reused for future events.
- Tent Anchoring: Tents must be weighted, not staked, to protect irrigation infrastructure. Event companies must use square weight blocks around tent legs. In the future, a designated, irrigation-free tent area may allow for staking.
- Generators: Generators must sit in heavy, spill-proof containers to prevent damage to turf. Once site development is complete, generators will be prohibited and only onsite power will be permitted.
- Vehicle Access: No vehicles are allowed on the grass, especially when wet, due to potential turf damage.
- Food and Alcohol: All food and beverage services must comply with Alberta Health Services (AHS) and Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC) regulations. Food trucks are recommended for simplicity.
- Waste and Washrooms: Organizers must provide all waste and recycling services, along with an adequate number of temporary portable washrooms.
- Site Clean-up and Damages: Organizers are fully responsible for all site cleanup, litter removal, and any turf damage. Costs for remediation will be charged back to the organizer.
