Types of benefits for City employees

The City’s benefit plans play a key part of the total compensation package. They may include life insurance, disability, extended health and dental care.

The City has three benefit plans for employees and an Employee & Family Assistance Program.

MEBAC Benefit Plan


Eligible City employees (except Firefighters) are covered by the Municipal Employees Benefit Association of Calgary (MEBAC) benefit plan. MEBAC manages and administers employee contributions to The City of Calgary employee benefits plan.

Firefighters Benefit Plan


All City Firefighters and Fire Mechanics, who are members of the International Association of Firefighters (Local 255), are covered by this collectively-bargained benefit plan. Employee contributions are required for some of the benefits.

Retiree Benefit Plan


The City of Calgary offers a Retiree Benefit Plan for those who retire before age 65. These benefits are optional and provide a bridge between early retirement and access to government benefits at age 65. The City and the retiree share the costs of the required premiums equally.

Employee & Family Assistance Program (EFAP)


Employees and their eligible dependents have access to professional counselling on a broad range of personal, work and family issues.
