Ward 1 Ward Sutherland
Prior to his first term as city councillor, Ward Sutherland held over 25 years of senior leadership and management positions in companies such as Sony, Tim Horton's, McDonald's and Hartco Corporation. He consistently achieved positive results in the management of multi-million dollar financial budgets, and received several awards for excelling in the business sector.
Ward has volunteered in Calgary for over 16 years. As the past president of the Rocky Ridge Royal Oak Community Association, his initiatives included an urban drilling policy, innovative seniors' programs, traffic calming measures and preservation of wetlands and parks. In 2013, he received the Queen Elizabeth II Diamond Jubilee Medal for his service to the community. His dedication to community service has helped him to achieve results as a councillor, including preserving park space, traffic flow solutions, safety improvements at intersections, school safety, and a bylaw change for e-bikes on pathways.
Ward brings to City Council his fiscally accountable approach to spending. As Vice Chair of Priorities and Finance, Ward's main areas of focus are the financial management of The City and reducing property taxes. He has driven the improved process of zero base reviews of departments to include the pure costing of delivering services and process. As a strong believer in accountability, he communicates with constituents with monthly detailed newsletters and a yearly report of outcomes.
