Ward 9 - Gian-Carlo Carra

May 2022 Newsletter

Hey Neighbour,

Jane’s Walk is back! Happening May 6th through 8th, this annual festival of free, community-led walking conversations inspired by Jane Jacobs is such a special way to learn about and explore our beautiful city.

Whether it’s taking in the unique labour history of our downtown core, drumming at the top of Nose Hill, or walking the music mile, there is literally something for everyone.

This Saturday, May 7, Councillor Carra will be leading a Jane’s Walk discussing the Death and Life of historic Inglewood. This walk will explore Jane’s first and last books as illustrated by a couple of blocks within Inglewood. Rediscover our City’s misremembered past in the patterns and echoes of its oldest neighborhood.

Saturday, May 7th, 2022
10am - 12:30pm
Walk Duration: 2.5
Pre-Registration is required for this walk

Then, later that same day, join us in Forest Lawn.

Over the last two months, The City of Calgary has collected thousands of comments from the community on aspirations and ideas for a future recreation and cultural hub in the area. We now invite you to join us for a Walking Tour in partnership with Jane’s Walk, to view the preliminary design ideas and provide your input to help refine these plans.

There are both self-guided tours (drop in any time between 1 and 4) as well as guided tours at 1PM and 3PM.

BIKE TO WORK DAY - FRIDAY, MAY 6th!

Tomorrow (Friday, May 6th) is Bike to Work Day! Check-in at any of the Energy Stations setup around downtown and $1 will be donated to the local charity Two Wheel View, a program dedicated to using the bicycle as a vehicle for change in the lives of youth.

PLUS: Take a picture of you or your bike, your view on your commute, or something cool along the way and tag @BiketoWorkYYC to be entered to win some really great prizes!

We hope to see you out there!

HAVE YOU REGISTERED YOUR BIKE?

If you haven't already, check out Bike Index, a free, non-profit, online bike registration service, that can help aid in returning stolen bikes back to their rightful owners.

Registering your bike online takes about 2 minutes and is completely free. Include photos, a serial number, and as much detail as you can - if your bike goes missing, you mark it as lost or stolen and the Bike Index community and its partners will be notified.

You can also browse a listing of bikes that have been reported missing in your city. (This is a great resource when buying a bike second-hand – a quick search of the database before you commit can help confirm if the bike has been reported missing at any point.)

Bike theft is a serious problem all over the world. It discourages people from riding, fuels crime, and undermines our sense of community. There is no quick-fix solution, but registering your bike is a helpful first step.

This video by Tom Babin at Shifter shares how one Canadian city is addressing bike theft and the direct impact bike registry has had on reducing the number of stolen bikes they are seeing.

COMMUNITY CLEAN-UP EVENTS

Community Cleanup events help save residents a trip to the landfill for items that do not fit in their waste and recycling carts or for residents who do not have access to cart service. This service is free of charge to all Calgarians.

On Saturdays and Sundays throughout the Spring, Summer, and Fall, Community Associations will partner with the City to host events for waste and recycling pickup. Packer trucks with crews, face coverings, sanitizer, gloves, and garbage bags for the group of community volunteers will be provided.

STREET SWEEPING + SPRING CLEAN-UP

The City’s Annual Spring Clean-up Program is underway. Below is some helpful information to help you prepare for sweeping in your neighbourhood.

A few things to know:

Daytime crews will sweep in communities Monday to Friday from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Parking bans are in place when signs are present.

Avoid parking tickets by planning ahead and moving vehicles: Enforcement will occur through our partnership with Calgary Parking. Vehicle owners that have not moved before sweepers are operating in their community may receive a fine.

Why we sweep?

To help the environment by keeping material out of our storm and river system

  • To help the environment by keeping material out of our storm and river system
  • To keep safe on our roads when walking, cycling, or operating a motorized vehicle
  • To keep our communities clean and reduce airborne particles

GREATER FOREST LAWN MULTI-SERVICES SITE

The City of Calgary is creating a Master Plan that will guide the future development of a multi-use recreation hub for the Greater Forest Lawn area. The Master Plan will provide a redevelopment roadmap that will reflect the needs and desires of the community through an extensive public engagement, planning and design program.

Community engagement is a key component of the project to ensure a complete range of input and perspectives is captured and reflected in the Master Plan.
