June Newsletter

Hello Ward 6,

It has been a busy and rewarding few weeks across Ward 6.

Our recent Open House was a tremendous success, with residents taking the time to speak directly with City Departments, share their experiences, and raise the issues that matter most to their communities.

I have also appreciated the opportunity to spend time throughout the Ward, visiting communities, attending local events on Neighbour Day, and hearing directly from residents. These conversations continue to shape the work of our office and help ensure Ward 6 priorities are brought forward at City Hall.

In this edition, you will find an update on the draft Calgary Plan, highlights from our time in the community, information about upcoming local events, the Calgary Stampede, and more.

Thank you for staying engaged and continuing to share your perspectives with our office.

Sincerely,

John Pantazopoulos, Ward 6 Councillor, CFA, ICD.D

The Calgary Plan

The Calgary Plan serves as a guiding document, meant to inform planning decisions across our growing city. The Calgary Plan will help guide how our city grows, develops, and moves over the next 30 years. The Calgary Plan is a policy document and does not change zoning.

At its core, the Calgary Plan places heavy emphasis on transit-oriented development, a direction highlighted during Council’s repeal of blanket rezoning.

At Council’s June 16 Strategic Meeting, I raised several concerns with the current draft. To find the full discussion from the June 16 Strategic Meeting and the draft Calgary Plan, please visit this link.

During the Strategic Meeting and in conversations with the project team, Councillor Pantazopoulos asked Administration to clarify:

- How local context and community character will be protected,

- What the 400 metre and 600 metre transit policies mean for established communities,

- How growth will be matched with infrastructure capacity,

- How Calgary’s energy sector and broader economy are reflected, and

- How public feedback has materially changed the Plan.

Councillor Pantazopoulos passed an amendment to the recommendations, ensuring Administration returns with the draft Calgary Plan, including a “What We Heard” report from engagement with Council Members in January 2027 prior to a final phase of public engagement.

The discussion on the Calgary Plan does not end here, and further public engagement is expected before it returns to Council for a future public hearing. Councillor Pantazopoulos will continue to push for clear policies that respect local context and ensure growth happens responsibly.

If you have thoughts or perspectives to share on the Calgary Plan, please reach out to our office (ward6@calgary.ca).

Ward 6 Open House with City Departments

The Ward 6 Open House with City Departments earlier this month was a tremendous success. In a growing City, it is crucial for our residents to have the opportunity to speak face-to-face with City Administration, and those responsible for projects within their community.

From the Douglas Fir Trail project team, to Mobility, to Planning & Development and much more, City Administration and representatives from local organizations came prepared to discuss their initiatives, answer questions, and learn more from residents.

To everyone who took the time to come out, thank you! Your presence and feedback makes a difference, and we are looking forward to hosting more events like this in the future.

In the Community

Calgary Housing Tour

Our office recently joined Calgary Housing for a tour of several Ward 6 sites to learn more about current projects and ongoing maintenance needs in our communities.

The tour provided a valuable look at the challenges facing residents and housing providers, as well as the importance of ensuring new and existing housing is supported by reliable infrastructure, community services, and thoughtful planning.

Thank you to the Calgary Housing team for sharing their expertise and helping us better understand the work underway across Ward 6.

Visit with Bow Cliff Seniors

Councillor Pantazopoulos had the pleasure of joining members of Bow Cliff Seniors for a coffee and conversation about the issues that matter most to older adults in our communities.

We discussed access to City services, affordable housing, quality of life, and the importance of stable support for organizations that help seniors remain active, independent, and connected.

For more than 50 years, Bow Cliff Seniors has created opportunities for older adults in southwest Calgary to build friendships, stay involved, and enjoy active living. Thank you to everyone who joined the conversation and shared their questions, experiences, and ideas with us.

Neighbour Day

What a great Neighbour Day across Ward 6!

We were pleased to visit celebrations throughout the ward and connect with residents, community associations, volunteers, and local organizations.

Thank you to everyone who organized these events and helped bring neighbours together. Your hard work and community spirit made the day such a success.

West Ridge School Visit

Our team had an amazing visit with students at the West Ridge School for their Urban Planning Conference.

Students shared their focus on parks, recreation, and mobility within their communities. It was inspiring to see our young leaders sharing their perspectives on how our communities should grow and change.

We’d like to thank Director Goldstein and members of the Planning & Development team for sharing their time and expertise with the students at West Ridge School. We’re so grateful for the perspectives shared by the students, and look forward to continuing the discussion on what priorities Ward 6 youth have in the development process.

Ward 6 Mobility Tour with Director McLeod

We were happy to tour Ward 6’s most challenging mobility locations with Director Troy McLeod. We saw firsthand the challenges and concerns that residents have brought forward to our office.

To all who have raised concerns about our roads and mobility network, thank you. Your feedback makes a difference, and we are thrilled to continue working with the Mobility Department to ensure these concerns are considered. We’d also like to thank Director McLeod for his time and expertise.

Ward 6 Open House with YMCA and Library

Thank you to everyone who joined us for the community open house with YMCA Calgary and Calgary Public Library to learn more about the proposed West District YMCA and Library.

The event gave residents an opportunity to speak directly with project representatives, ask questions, and share feedback on the programs, services, and amenities they would like to see in this proposed community facility.

The proposed project is envisioned as a major gathering place for west Calgary, bringing together recreation, wellness, community programming, and library services in one accessible location. For more information on the proposed project, please visit this link.

Noise Bylaw Concerns

The Calgary Stampede is a treasured event and economic driver for the City of Calgary. It is imperative that this crucial piece of Calgary’s heritage and future is valued and stood up for. For those reasons, Calgary’s City Council and City Administration have continued working with the Calgary Stampede and nearby event operators to ensure an orderly, safe, and fun experience for all guests and residents involved.

The City of Calgary and major Stampede tent operators have reached a new agreement that strengthens late-night noise protections for nearby residents while supporting a vibrant festival atmosphere.

The issue has been a growing concern in recent years. Since 2019, tents have operated under expanded exemptions, with live music continuing until nearly 2 a.m. Residents reported significant impacts, including shaking windows, rattling shelves, and increased public disorder in surrounding neighbourhoods.

In response, the City introduced updated rules this year, which are still more permissive than those in comparable jurisdictions across North America. These included ending weeknight live music at midnight, maintaining existing weekend hours, and reducing allowable bass and overall volume.

Compared to last year, the outcome delivers meaningful improvements: lower bass levels, a consistent midnight end time for live music every night, and earlier wrap-up of weeknight activity—1 a.m. instead of 2 a.m.

This balanced approach allows Calgary to maintain its energetic Stampede celebrations while ensuring a quieter and more respectful environment for residents.

As Stampede begins, residents and visitors alike  are encouraged to support local businesses, enjoy the festivities, and help  showcase Calgary as one of the world’s great festival cities.
