Sunalta Community Hub
What did we do?
The Sunalta Community Association built a new community hub to support programs for Calgarians. With support from the Centralized Climate Fund (CCF), the project included climate goals in both the design and construction.
The hub includes upgrades to the building envelope and mechanical systems. These upgrades improve energy use, reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, lower operating costs, and improve health and safety for people using the building.
Project highlights
- Supported by the CCF to include climate goals in design and construction
- Upgrades to the building envelope and mechanical systems
- Designed to improve energy use, reduce GHG emissions, and support occupant health and safety
Did you know?
The upgrades improve comfort and cooling. This helps make the community hub safer and more comfortable for people using the space.
Why did we do it?
Improving building performance
The project includes several energy-saving upgrades:
- Increased insulation in the roof and in the walls
- Upgraded windows and skylights from double-glazed to triple-glazed units
- Replaced a gas-fired furnace with a variable refrigerant flow system for heating and cooling
- Made building design changes to support these upgrades
Funding
The project received $499,410 from the Centralized Climate Fund. This funding supports capital costs related to climate measures.
About the Centralized Climate Fund
This project was supported by the Centralized Climate Fund (CCF). The fund supports City and Civic Partner projects that reduce greenhouse gas emissions or help lower climate risks.
Low‑carbon built infrastructure
The project is expected to reduce greenhouse gas emissions by about 194 tCO₂e over an estimated 25-year lifespan.
Climate‑resilient built infrastructure
The upgrades improve comfort and cooling. This helps protect health and safety for people using the building.
