Wrapping up a remarkable year

Green Line LRT - SE Project Newsletter

Looking back on a transformational year

This has been a remarkable year for the Green Line LRT Project. 2025 began with significant uncertainty and we close it out with approval and funding for Phase 1 from all three orders of government and active construction at five sites along the alignment. And we’re just getting started!

We are grateful for the ongoing support of Calgarians and your excitement as construction progresses.

Here’s a look back at what we’ve accomplished this year.

Removed 91,000 cubic metres of soil from the site of the Maintenance & Storage Facility to prepare for main construction.

Drilled 170 boreholes along the SE Segment to test ground conditions and support the final designs of all stations and structures.

Drilled 22 piles to support piers for the elevated guideway above 114 Avenue and Barlow Trail SE.

Completed the 78 Avenue Project in Ogden, improving transportation and pedestrian safety in the community prior to main construction.

Inventoried 2,957 trees to plan for tree protection and reduce impacts during construction.

Hosted 2 industry events, connecting partners in the construction industry.

Surveyed 48 wetlands along the Green Line.

Launched The City of Calgary's first Indigenous Construction Monitoring Program.

Attended 28 community events, speaking to thousands of Calgarians.

Looking ahead to a pivotal 2026

After a landmark year in 2025, we’re gearing up for an even more ambitious 2026.

In spring, we’ll select a contractor to build the first elevated section at 114 Avenue and Barlow Trail SE. By fall, five major civil works contracts will be awarded to the shortlisted companies we announced in November. These contracts include:

  • Shepard to Bow (includes six at-grade stations)
  • Elevated Stations (includes the Ramsay/Inglewood and 26 Avenue SE stations)
  • Bow River (includes bridges over Ogden Road, the Bow River, and Deerfoot Trail)
  • Ramsay Elevated Guideway
  • Highfield (includes at-grade station and nearby CN Highfield tunnel fit-out)

Throughout 2026, we will also see the completion of the four remaining projects that began in 2025, including the 114 Avenue and Barlow Trail SE Piling and Road Reconfiguration, the Ogden Road Realignment, the Blackfoot Trail LRT Bridge, and the 78 Avenue LRT Bridge.

Requests for proposals will also be issued for other critical components, including the Signalling and Train Control System, Communications and Traction Power Systems, the Maintenance and Storage Facility and related equipment for the facility, and track.

With so much work moving forward in 2026, the next step is clear: build, build, build. Stay tuned for updates as these projects take shape throughout the year.

Downtown Segment update

With construction underway on the SE Segment, from Shepard to the Event Centre/Grand Central Station, work is concurrently moving forward on the Functional Plan for the Downtown Segment.

The Functional Plan is examining an elevated alignment between the Event Centre/Grand Central Station, along 10 Avenue in the Beltline and 2 Street SW downtown. This work includes validating the design and costs for the elevated alignment. Among the items being studied are property impacts, access, noise and vibration, flooding and stormwater impacts, mobility considerations, and safety.

Public engagement begins in Q1 2026 and will inform our recommendations for the Downtown Segment. The engagement will include a range of in-person and online opportunities for Calgarians to share their feedback and priorities. We will share what we hear, how it is being applied, and how it influences the technical planning. Stay tuned for more information.
