We are currently in the early design phase of this project. We will provide more information as the project progresses. Stay tuned for updates!
About the project
The 1 Street S.E. Revitalization project focuses on streetscape and underpass improvements along the 1 Street S.E. corridor. It aims to connect the heart and culture of the city through a greener, safer, and more vibrant corridor linking the Bow and Elbow Rivers.
Building on the strong foundations established in Calgary’s Greater Downtown Plan, the Civic District Cultural Plan, and the Underpass Enhancement Program, this project will be implemented in stages.
Improvements will feature key design elements such as:
Project scope
The 1 Street S.E. Revitalization Project is estimated to span from Riverfront Avenue S.E. to 11 Avenue S.E. We are currently funded to progress the design.
Project benefits
The 1 Street S.E. Revitalization Project aims to create a “complete street” that balances mobility, public space, and long‑term sustainability, through:
-
Improved safety and comfort
For people walking, wheeling and cycling
-
A greener streetscape
To enhance the public realm
-
A more vibrant cultural and economic corridor
That supports local businesses, events, and public life
-
Modernized underground infrastructure
To ensure reliability for decades to come
Connection to Calgary’s Greater Downtown Plan
The Greater Downtown Plan set a direction, supported by public engagement, to prioritize walkability, green space, and public realm improvements in the downtown core. Major investments in nearby civic and cultural institutions including Stephen Avenue Revitalization Project, Werklund Centre Transformation and Glenbow Reimagined are underway.
Aligning construction timelines reduces long‑term disruption and ensures the area evolves cohesively. Calgarians have consistently asked for a greener, safer, more people‑focused downtown, and this project directly responds to that feedback.
