Eau Claire Temporary Green Space
Background
To support the long-term needs of the Green Line project, The City has proactively acquired land in key locations, including Eau Claire, to ensure we are prepared for future infrastructure requirements. As part of this initiative, The City of Calgary took possession of the land to the east of Eau Claire Plaza (the former River Run Condominium site) in June 2024 to prepare for future redevelopment as part of the Green Line LRT.
The existing buildings on the site were demolished to facilitate future LRT development as part of the Green Line project.
While planning for the Green Line LRT continues, this space will be activated as a temporary green space to provide a welcoming, active and accessible space for Calgarians. Once The City is ready to proceed with the site’s permanent use, the temporary green space will be removed.
Design
As Calgary grows and more people move to the downtown core, it is important that Calgarians have spaces where they can relax, socialize and be active outside of their homes.
The green space will be a natural turf field that can support all kinds of activities, like informal sports, picnics and casual recreation. This temporary installation will also expand the public space available at the newly redesigned Eau Claire Plaza.
The design was guided by previous community engagement efforts and input from local groups and residents.
Construction
Construction of the temporary green space will begin in October 2025, with anticipated completion and availability to the public in spring 2026.
During construction, eight trees will be removed from the site based on tree health and future site use. To support Calgary’s urban forest, The City plans to plant replacement trees in other locations.
Construction will primarily take place during the day to avoid noise disruption at night and will adhere to all applicable bylaws for noise and dust control.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)
Will the new site be bookable?
The site is intended for casual use and is not expected to be available through The City’s park rental system.
Can my dog be off-leash in this green space?
The space is not intended for use as an off-leash area, leashed pets are welcome.
Can The City build other recreation infrastructure at this location?
The site is temporary. Since anything we build here will be deconstructed when The City is ready to move forward with the site’s ultimate use as part of the Green Line LRT, investing in permanent infrastructure would not be a responsible use of public funds.
What will happen to the former Eau Claire Market site?
The City does not own the site of the former Eau Claire Market. Future plans for that property are at the discretion of its owner.
Will there be a Green Line facility at this location?
The Council-approved 46-kilometre vision for the Green Line LRT remains unchanged. This includes an elevated crossing over the Bow River and a future station at 2 Avenue S.W. in Eau Claire.
