Calgary is a growing and vibrant city that continues to welcome numerous new residents each year. As Canada's third biggest city, we're planning and building our communities so they can continue to thrive and be successful. This work ensures we are taking a sustainable and strategic approach to Calgary's infrastructure for an accessible, connected city.

The Capital Projects Map is an online interactive tool to help Calgarians search for upcoming and ongoing capital infrastructure projects throughout the city. The map, based on The City's geospatial system, includes project descriptions, schedules, budgets and project status.

The Capital Projects Map is currently in its pilot phase, with ongoing improvements and additions planned.  A limited number of projects are featured on the map, providing an opportunity to test its performance and usability.

What are capital infrastructure projects?

Capital infrastructure projects are large construction and development projects that enhance public services and facilities, including utilities, bridges, parks and public buildings

What are the phases of a project?

Concept: This project is working on turning initial ideas into a practical plan through feasibility studies, geotechnical studies, or engagement.

Design: This project is developing detailed plans and drawings to ensure it meets all requirements before construction begins.

Build: This project is carrying out the detailed plans from the design phase, including construction or other tasks, like buying land, getting permits or purchasing materials. This phase is complete after a construction completion certificate is issued.

Warranty: This project is now fully up and running. Documentation of any remaining risks, lessons learned about what was done and benefits to Calgarians is captured in this phase.

How does The City ensure projects stay on budget and on schedule?

The City uses project management best practices and checks progress regularly to keep projects on budget and on time. Teams also plan for possible problems and backup solutions.

What is the approved budget vs actual cost?

The approved budget for a project is the money set aside before construction starts. The actual cost can change due to weather, available materials, site conditions and other factors. A project is considered to be on budget if it’s expected to finish within the set amount.

Where does capital funding come from?

Not all of The City's capital fits within a four-year cycle. Some projects are already underway, some will be getting started and some will extend into the next budget cycle.

Capital funding comes from different sources:

  • Federal and provincial government grants
  • Corporate reserves
  • Self-supported debt
  • Business unit reserves
  • Developer/other contributions/levies

What happens if a capital project goes over budget or is delayed?

The City will look into why this happened, identify any problems and tell the public. We are committed to transparency and making sure we use our resources effectively.
