2025 Progress Summary
As of December 2025, we have:
- Removed the old overhead power and communications lines and poles
- Built underground ducts and installed new power and communications lines
- Built a paved and lighted temporary detour road
- Installed new deep utilities
- Installed a new water feedermain for future connection
Work will continue in Spring 2026 with construction of new roadway and related works.
About the project
The Country Hills Boulevard N.E. Widening Project is a major infrastructure improvement happening in northeast Calgary. Starting in May 2025, work will begin to widen the section of road between Barlow Trail and 36 Street N.E. to help reduce traffic, improve safety, and support future growth. The project is fully funded by the City of Calgary.
Scope of work
Key components of the project include:
- Widening about 800 meters of Country Hills Boulevard between Barlow Trail and 36 Street N.E.
- Pre-installation of a section of water feeder main
- Moving overhead power and communications lines underground
- Building new sidewalks and pathways
- Adding storm drains and utility lines
- Installing streetlighting and upgrading intersections with traffic signals
- Landscaping and overall site restoration

Project timeline
Construction begins May 2025 and is expected to be complete by fall 2026. Planned work in 2026 includes:
- April - Crews return to start 2026 construction.
- August - The first half of the new road opens; traffic moves off the detour.
- September: The second half of the road is built.
- October: Final touches (lights, sidewalks, and trees) are finished. Construction is expected to be fully complete by October 2026.
