We are upgrading the Rocky Ridge boardwalk to create a safer, more accessible connection for cyclists, wheeling users and pedestrians.
Project overview
The boardwalk over the stormwater pond adjacent to the Shane Homes YMCA at Rocky Ridge was originally designed for pedestrian use only, with signage installed advising cyclists to dismount prior to crossing. As active transportation needs and accessibility expectations have evolved, The City is proactively upgrading the structure to better serve cyclists and wheeling users.

Boardwalk closed until further notice.
An engineering consultant has been engaged to design the upgrade, which will widen the boardwalk and improve its railing to support a broader range of users including wheeling and reduced mobility users. To improve safety for cyclists and wheeling users, the boardwalk will remain closed until the upgrades are completed.
Construction is targeted for spring 2027, subject to funding approval. We are actively seeking funding through Council's prioritization and deliberation process in November 2026 for the 2027–2030 service cycle.

The boardwalk will reopen to cyclists and all users upon completion of the upgrade.

Following completion of preliminary investigation, the consultant advances to detailed design and prepare construction-ready drawings. Concurrently, the City is also proactively ensuring compliance with all environmental regulations and approvals for the upgrade. The City is actively seeking funding during the November 2026 budget process to target a Spring 2027 construction start.
The engineering consultant is advancing the upgrade design. Assessment of the existing structure has been performed to confirm design parameters and widening scope. The City is coordinating closely with the Shane Homes YMCA and Ward 1 office.
The boardwalk was closed to protect public safety while plans for the upgrade were developed. Closure signage was installed at both the north and south approaches.

When will the boardwalk reopen?

Why is the boardwalk closed?
The boardwalk was originally designed for pedestrian use only with signages in place to advise cyclists to dismount before using the boardwalk. The current decking and railing configuration is not suited to cyclists and wheeling users, so the boardwalk has been closed while the City designs and secures funding for a comprehensive upgrade.
What upgrades are planned?
The upgrade will widen the boardwalk to 3.0 metres and replace the deck surface with boards oriented perpendicular to the path of travel - improving safety for cyclists, wheeling users and pedestrians . The railing will also be upgraded to meet current standards for cyclists.
Can I still use the area around the boardwalk?
The boardwalk itself is closed to all users during this period. Surrounding pathways and park areas remain open. Please follow all posted signage and barriers.
