Bringing clean, reliable drinking water to current and future development in East Belvedere. East Belvedere Feeder Main

Project status - April 2026

We are making progress on construction to install the feeder main which is taking place on the north side of Memorial Drive (westbound lanes) between Abbeydale Drive SE and the intersection at 68 Street S.E.

This is resulting in closure of the westbound lanes. Traffic is being detoured to the south lanes, so two-way, east-west, traffic can be maintained.

We recently completed installing the feeder main east of the 68th Street S.E. intersection. Once paving is complete, which is expected in early April, the westbound lanes of Memorial Drive will reopen.

Work begins at 68 Street S.E. intersection in Early April

Crews will begin work at the intersection at 68th Street and Memorial Drive in early April. This work will be completed in phases, which will result in differentiating traffic delays until the end of the month – access to businesses may be limited but will always be maintained. Signage will be in place to direct drivers and alternating detours will be in place throughout the stages which include the following approximate dates.

  • Stage 1: April 2 to April 6
    • Access to business plaza is from 68 Street southbound and Memorial Drive westbound.
    • Access to the Esso gas station is from westbound Memorial.
  • Stage 2: April 6 to April 17
    • Access to the business plaza is from 68 Street southbound. No access from Memorial Drive.
    • Access to the Esso gas station is not impacted.
  • Stage 3: April 17 to April 20
    • Access to the plaza from 68 Street southbound. No access from Memorial Drive.
    • Access to the Esso gas station is not impacted.
  • Stage 4: April 20 to May 4
    • Access to the business plaza and Esso gas station is not impacted.

Please note, a section of parking is prohibited on Applegrove Cresent daily from 8 a.m. – 4 p.m. for the duration of the project which is expected to be complete by August 2026.

A section of the area pathway will also be closed from approximately February to Fall 2026. Please see the map below for additional information.

Project background

The City of Calgary is building a new 2-kilometre-long feeder main which is an essential piece of water infrastructure that will bring clean and reliable drinking water to current and future development within the East Belvedere community.

The feeder main is being constructed in phases.

  • Phase 1 includes the installation of a feeder main along Memorial Drive from 68 Street S.E. to 84 Street S.E. and then eastward along a future extension of Memorial Drive.
  • Phase 2a, where construction also starts this fall, includes the portion from 84 Street S.E. to 100 Street S.E. along the future extension of Memorial Drive.
  • Phase 2b, which was completed this spring (2025) includes the portion on 100 Street S.E. on the future extension of Memorial Drive travelling south to 17 Avenue S.E.

Construction for Phase 1 is expected to begin winter 2025. Phase 2a began fall 2025. The first section of construction for Phase 1 takes place in the grassed area east of 68th Street S.E.. The entire feeder main is expected to be complete by fall of 2026.

Frequently asked questions

Why is this feeder main needed?

With Calgary’s population growing, this feeder main is needed to support current and future growth in the East Belvedere area.

When will construction start?

Our contractor is finalizing plans and we expect to begin mobilizing to the site in early/mid December 2025.

What area will construction begin in?

We are starting just east of 68th Street S.E. in the grassed area south of Abalone Way. Residents who back onto that area will be notified via construction notices that will be delivered to their homes prior to construction. These will detail the specific impacts and timelines.

What is happening to the cement barriers that have artwork that were at the end of Memorial Drive?

We will be moving these permanently and they will not be required in the future as Memorial Drive is being extended as part of Memorial Drive Extension project.

Will any trees be removed as part of the project?

We did have to remove some trees in the greenspace area east of Memorial Drive and we are making our best effort to replant the trees in consultation with the Community Association. So far we have relocated 15 trees and will replant trees we are unable to relocate to sustain our City’s tree canopy.

Will the intersection of Memorial Drive and 68th Street be closed?

There may be lane closures but we plan to keep traffic flowing in all directions. We will have more information on this as we get closer to construction in this area which we estimate will be in Q1 of 2026.
