Mckenzie Sanitary Siphon Upgrade

Critical upgrades to ensure resilient and efficient wastewater transportation Mckenzie Sanitary Siphon Upgrade

The Mckenzie Siphon is a crucial part of the City of Calgary’s wastewater system, transporting wastewater to the Fish Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant.

The siphon consists of an inlet chamber and two underground pipes that allow wastewater to flow freely to the treatment plant and then to the river, preventing backups in both low and high flow conditions.

The siphon is primarily located in Fish Creek Provincial Park near the community of Deer Run, just north of the Fish Creek Wastewater Treatment Plant. It extends south under the Bow River and ends near the community of Mckenzie Lake.

Built in 1980, it now needs upgrades which will enhance the system’s integrity and capacity to prevent breaks and sewage backups for homeowners and businesses during heavy rainfall.

Construction is anticipated to begin in summer 2026 and is expected to be completed in Fall 2027. Most of the upgrade work involves trench excavation to install two new sanitary pipes. Microtunnelling will be used to install the siphon pipes under the river.

This project is separate from the Fish Creek Wastewater Plant Upgrade project, but will contribute to efficiently transporting wastewater to the plant.

Project benefits

  • Provides resiliency to our wastewater transportation infrastructure through installing these new pipes and using the existing pipes as redundancy.
  • Adds capacity to the wastewater infrastructure to address current and future population growth.
  • Ensures wastewater flows freely to the treatment plant and then to the river, preventing backups in both low and high flow conditions.

Frequently Asked Questions

What is the construction timeline?

We are planning to begin construction in summer 2026 and it will last until fall 2027. These dates are subject to change based on weather, supply and other factors.

Will there be any pathways/roads closed?

There will be pathway closures of the Bow River Pathway on the east side of the Bow River near the community of Mckenzie Lake.  Detours and/or temporary pathways will be provided to pathway users.  More details will be provided at a later date. Additionally, 153 Avenue, which is the road entering Fish Creek Provincial Park, will be temporarily closed at some point during construction.

How will construction impacts and progress be communicated to nearby residents and businesses?

Prior to and during construction, residents and businesses will be notified through delivered Construction Notices which will include information on impacts, timelines and status of the project. This project website will also be regularly updated.

Will the current siphon still be used after the new pipes are installed?

Yes as it provides redundancy to the system. We will be inspecting it after we install the new Mckenzie Siphon pipes.

What is the pipe material made out of?

The siphon pipe material is a combination of PVC and steel.
