Expanding local wastewater system capacity for future growth and to prevent overflow

Project overview

The existing Penbrooke sanitary trunk is often at capacity. Because of this homes in its service area may experience basement flooding. This can happen during heavy precipitation. This project seeks to prevent this and upgrade the system to support future development by twinning the existing line. Several options were explored during project design. Twinning the existing sanitary trunk between Big Marlborough Park and the intersection of 54 Street S.E. and the CP rail tracks was determined to be the best route.

The project is currently scheduled to begin construction in 2027 and will take approximately two years to complete.

This project will:

  • Twin the existing sanitary trunk line with 2.8 kilometres of 1050 mm pipe. This will be known as the West Twin Trunk.
  • Begin near Hubalta Road in the south and continue north to Big Marlborough Park, predominantly along 60 Street S.E. corridor.
  • Bring significant construction impacts to nearby communities. We will make every effort to minimize disruption where possible.

Significant construction impacts are expected. Residents, businesses and commuters in the area can expect:

  • Temporary lane closures, including on Memorial Drive
  • Temporary changes to transit routes
  • Pathway closures and disruptions
  • Mailbox relocations
  • Disruptions to business access along Hubalta road
  • Tree removals
  • Noise and vibrations
  • Play field impacts 

Minimizing construction impacts

  • Smart scheduling

    Work around schools will be scheduled when not in session, when possible.

  • Using trenchless drilling when possible

    While not always possible in all cases, we will minimize disruptions across roadways where we can.

  • Replanting removed trees

    Tree removal is a last resort. When trees are removed, we will replant the same number to preserve our urban tree canopy.

  • Connecting with residents

    We are committed to keeping residents informed of construction impacts as they evolve.

Project value: $45 million

This represents a major investment into east Calgary’s wastewater network.

Frequently asked questions

Will construction affect residential roads and sidewalks?

Yes. Some roads and sidewalks will close temporarily during construction. Crews will place signs and detours where needed. More information will be made available closer to the project start date.

Will parking be affected?

Yes. Street parking will be temporarily unavailable in some work areas.

Will my water service be affected?

Temporary water shutoffs may be necessary. Crews will notify affected residents before any planned shutoff.

Will traffic be disrupted on major roadways?

Yes. Lane closures will be in place to facilitate sanitary trunk crossing, most notably on Memorial drive.

Are trees being removed during this project?

Yes, some trees will be removed, mostly along the 60 St SE corridor. When trees are removed, we will replant the same number to preserve our urban tree canopy.
