Traffic Operations and Monitoring
Traffic Management Centre (TMC)
Here at the Traffic Management Centre (TMC), we monitor Calgary’s traffic and road conditions, 24 hours a day, seven days a week. When a traffic issue is found, our staff respond. Some of the ways we do this includes changing signal timings, lane reversals and pushing out traffic information to the public.
Alberta Transportation Partnership
The City has partnered with Alberta Transportation to help keep traffic flowing along Deerfoot Trail and Stoney Trail. When a traffic issue is detected, the TMC shares this information with drivers through our roadside electronic signs. This information can include lane closures, changing travel times, major construction and alternate route options.
The TMC is now able to synchronize our traffic lights faster. With new second-by-second signal monitoring, the TMC can now adjust Calgary’s signals when needed. This means less waiting for lights to change to colour and improved traffic flow.
The TMC operates several lane reversals in Calgary that help reduce traffic congestion. A lane reversal allows traffic to flow in different directions at different times of the day. They are mostly used in Calgary to provide additional lanes for motorists during peak traffic hours.
The TMC provides Calgarians with the latest traffic updates through numerous channels. This includes our online Traffic Map, Roadside Traffic Alert Signs, on our @yyctransport Twitter account and on The City’s Traffic Advisory Radio station at 107.9 fm.
