Travel time technology

The City of Calgary uses cloud based technology to give Calgarians real-time travel information during their commute. This innovative technology collects live road data and estimates travel times along routes. The time is displayed on electronic message signs at key locations around Calgary.

The benefits of this technology to Calgarians are:

  • Improved ability for drivers to make informed route planning choices.
  • Decreased driver frustration.
  • Real-time updates of congestion on routes.

The City has installed travel time systems along Deerfoot Trail, Crowchild Trail, Glenmore Trail, Macleod Trail and Stoney Trail. Travel times are displayed on message boards from 5 a.m. to 6:30 p.m., Monday to Friday.

Deerfoot Trail: travel time information system

The Deerfoot Trail travel time system consists of ten permanent message boards from Airport Trail in the northeast to Barlow Trail in the southeast.

Stoney Trail: travel time information system

The Stoney Trail travel time system consists of eleven permanent message boards from Country Hill Boulevard NW to Chaparral Boulevard SE.

Other Routes: travel time information

Several additional message signs have been added along main routes within Calgary to inform travelers of travel times to key destinations.

Sign locations:

  • Westbound Glenmore Trail at Ogden Road S.E. – showing travel times to Crowchild Trail and Bow Trail.
  • Southbound Crowchild Trail at 12 Mile Coulee Road N.W. – showing travel times to Memorial Drive N.W. and Glenmore Trail S.W.
  • Northbound Macleod Trail at Anderson Road S.E. – showing travel times to City Hall and Crowchild Trail via Glenmore Trail S.W.
  • Westbound 16 Avenue east of Stoney Trail N.E. – showing travel times to the west end of the city via two routes, 16 Avenue and Stoney Trail.
