The Home Program

The Home Program provides funding to non-profit organizations to deliver projects that increase housing stability and successful tenancies for affordable housing residents or people in housing need.

This program will deliver a 14-session housing education workshop series for 240 newcomers, supported by a multilingual, low-literacy Housing Stability Toolkit covering tenant rights, budgeting, and home maintenance.

Home Grown: Roots Against Isolation

This project will establish a year-round community garden program at Onward Homes' Alice Bisset site, engaging up to 50 residents through hands-on gardening, a resident-led Garden Council, and wellness workshops to reduce social isolation, piloting a replicable model for affordable housing sites.

Grandma’s Kitchen  

This program will launch a monthly in-person cooking and kitchen safety program for residents who have experienced chronic homelessness, combining hands-on cooking with life skills education on food safety, meal budgeting, and fire prevention.

Indigenous Housing Stability Pathway Pilot 

This project will provide two embedded Indigenous Peer Support Workers to provide culturally grounded tenancy stabilization for Indigenous participants during the critical post-placement period and will produce an Indigenous Peer Housing Stabilization Framework to support replication across Calgary's housing system.

Calgary Newcomers Affordable Housing Assessment Tool 

In partnership with Liberty Housing Organization, this project will develop and pilot a standardized, culturally responsive affordable housing assessment tool to improve how newcomers are matched to affordable housing. It will be implemented across two new Liberty Housing developments and shared sector-wide upon completion.

Decolonizing RentSmart  

In partnership with the Community Housing Transformation Centre, this project will develop an Indigenized version of the national RentSmart tenant education curriculum, guided by an Elders Wisdom Circle, alongside a complementary landlord education module, for national distribution upon completion.

Establishes a place-based Recovery Hub at James House in Hillhurst-Kensington, embedding low-barrier mental health and substance use supports, including group programming, counselling, culturally grounded healing practices, and peer support, directly within a high-density housing community.

Validating Assessment Tools for Housing Stability 

With Onward Homes, this project aims to externally validate and refine the assessment tools developed through its Seniors Aging in Place program for low-income seniors, then deploys them across additional seniors' buildings to shift toward proactive, data-driven care.

About the Home Program

The Home Program provides funding to non-profit organizations to deliver projects that increase housing stability and successful tenancies for affordable housing residents or people in housing need. Our priority areas are:

  • Education and skill building - Increase knowledge and skills to successfully maintain and remain in a home.
  • Financial empowerment - Strengthen financial inclusion, knowledge, behaviours and opportunities.
  • Community inclusion and integration - Increase participation, engagement and involvement with the local community, services and supports.
  • Initiatives that address barriers and root causes of housing instability for Indigenous people.
  • Initiatives that address barriers and root causes of housing instability for Black, Racialized people, and equity-deserving communities.

There are three types of Home Program grants. These grants are for non-profit organizations that serve affordable housing residents or Calgarians in housing need, including housing providers and other service organizations. Download the Home Program grant guidelines.

Community Grant – grants for new projects up to $25,000. These are grants for projects that stimulate innovative, lasting, positive changes that will increase housing stability and successful tenancies.

Partnership Initiative Grant - grants from $25,001 - $200,000 for new projects. These larger grants aim to leverage collaboration and partnership to reduce barriers to non-market housing.

Sustainability Initiative Grant – grants for projects that have received a Home Program grant in a past year and require more support for projects that have the potential to be scaled-up, replicated, or achieve sustainability without any grant in the future. Past projects funded through a Community or Partnership Initiative grant are eligible. There is an option to choose this Grant on both the Community Grant and the Partnership Initiative application forms.
