Media - Day 4 grades 4-6 learning activities

These activities will help youth build a positive view of themselves and recognize their strengths while thinking about media. They can be done alone or with friends over a video chat such as Skype, Zoom, Facetime, etc.

Many things that used to happen in person now happen online. This means that we are digital citizens and we can work to do good things online.

Do this true or false quiz with your child to practice learning about digital citizenship. To make it more fun, have your child hop like a bunny if they think the answer is true, and curl up like a rock if they think the answer is false (or choose other actions based on your child’s abilities).

True or False:

  1. It’s ok to share my password with my friends.
  2. The Internet can help me learn new skills.
  3. I should let my parents/guardians know if I am creating a new account.
  4. I can say mean things online that I wouldn’t say in person.
  5. I should tell a parent/guardian when a stranger talks to me online.

Supplies: camera or cellphone camera

Choose an activity like lunch, watching tv, playing games, having a snack, going for a walk.

Ask your child to take photos during the activity. The idea is to take the picture during an action or activity.

Go through the photos and find goodness within all of them.

Discuss how even though there are imperfections there is still beauty in the photo.

Supplies:

  • magazines
  • newspaper
  • scissors
  • glue
  • paper or cardboard
  • pencils

Have your child select their favorite fruit, then draw it on a piece of paper or card board.

Look through magazines for images or text with the same color of the fruit. You can cut it our or rip them out with your fingers. Use the magazine pieces to fill out the shape of your fruit. You can cut the edges to make it fit perfectly inside your fruit shape.

Use white or black newspaper pieces to fill in the background.

The final product will look like a mosaic or collage with different textures and shades of the same color.

Social Distancing means we need to physically distance ourselves from friends and other family members. But we can still stay in touch with them. Here are some ideas for your child to stay connected with friends, family and neighbours. Pick 2-3 and make plans for this week.

  1. Be extra neighbourly: Connect with neighbours by bringing lunch or dinner to the bottom of your driveway, your porch, deck or other safe distance location and waving to each other.
  2. Book Club: You and your friends can pick a book a month and have monthly discussions on chat or video.
  3. Write a Letter: Write letters to your neighbors or friends. If you do not want to use Canada Post, you can leave it at their doorstep or give them the letter when you can see them again.
  4. Make a lunch date: Pick a day and time to eat lunch together online once a week with your best friends or family members.
  5. Dance it out together: Host virtual dance parties with your friends. Select your favorite tunes and dance with your friends on video chat.
  6. Share: Make a list of your favorite movies, music playlists, books, podcasts, blogs, TV shows and share it with your friends.
  7. Get outdoors: Hiking and walking is ok if you are not quarantined and do not have symptoms. Keep a 2-metre distance from those around you.
  8. Plan online activities with your friends: Throw online theme parties with your friends or game nights. Set up virtual hangouts. You can chat during your party, video call or share pictures.
  9. “Go” to the movies together: Pick a movie you and your friends can stream together. Set up a date and time and connect with them on chat or video to discuss the movie.
  10. Share your skills with your friends and family: Do you have a skill you could teach others? Do you play an instrument, know a nice recipe or do a dance move? Connect with friends and family and teach them your skill.
