What’s Happening in Our City

I hope everyone had a wonderful Canada Day and an enjoyable Calgary Stampede!

As we head into August, summer programming continues to be underway in the city.

For summer gardening tips, you can explore the city’s YardSmart lawn care tips at calgary.ca/yardsmart. Enjoying a summer camp fire? Visit calgary.ca/fire for tips about how to reduce fire risk and dispose of smoking materials.

Looking to find fresh, seasonal food this summer? Find locations, dates, and times for farm stands across the city at calgary.ca/localfood. Some farm stands in Ward 1 include:

  • Shirley’s Greenhouse at the Tuscany Club on Fridays from 3pm-7pm.

  • Broxburn Vegetables at the Valley Ridge Community Association on Wednesdays from 10am-1pm.

  • Fresh Pal Farms at the Crowfoot LRT Station on Wednesdays from 4:30pm-6pm.

The city has fun and free summer activities for all ages! Programs are supervised and a great way to get outside, stay active, and make memories. For more information, visit calgary.ca/free

Supporting Residents During Construction

Construction on Stage B of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project will continue throughout the Summer. Construction will span from 73 Street NW to 87 Street NW, with a possible extension to the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant. An open-cut method will be used.

I recently visited the construction site in Bowness, and was very impressed at the efficiency and care of this project.

I know construction can be disruptive and I am focused on ensuring residents have the support and information they need.

Resources are available at the Community Resource Centre at the Bowness Community Association. For questions, please email BSFMProject@calgary.ca.

Residents and businesses in Bowness along the feeder main alignment should anticipate more mail drop updates, construction notices and info sessions.

Due to the accelerated pace of the BSFM project, construction details remain subject to change. For the most recent updates, please visit https://www.calgary.ca/planning/water/bearspaw-feeder-main/replacement-project.html.

Listening to the Community

This month, I enjoyed meeting and talking to many constituents at Stampede events across Ward 1!

If you have comments or concerns about what is happening in Ward 1 and across the city, please fill out this short survey: https://forms.gle/s3PwPWFtmqRkw6gp7

The City of Calgary is proposing changes to the city’s flood bylaws. These proposed bylaws and land use changes would heavily impact residents in Bowness. After hearing from residents, it is clear that better engagement is needed before this can move to the next stages.

I will continue to listen to Ward 1 residents and advocate for our communities. If you will be impacted by these flood bylaws, please consider filling out this short survey: https://forms.gle/ubfCEi4XW4rWfZgN8.

Thank You for an Amazing Stampede

Every year, at the beginning of July, the city comes together to celebrate the Calgary Stampede!

It was an honour to take part in the Calgary Stampede parade downtown and in the Bowness Stampede parade that took place right in Ward 1. It is incredible to see the sense of community in the city during the Stampede season.

I joined my Council colleagues and fellow members of the Calgary Arts Development Board by flipping pancakes at the First Flip Stampede breakfast to kickoff Stampede. I also enjoyed volunteering and attending numerous Stampede breakfasts across Ward 1.

Thank you to all of the hardworking volunteers and organizers who make these events happen and bring joy to the community through their efforts.

Serving you at City Hall and in the Community
