Summer is Here!

As we enter into the summer season, the City has summer programming for Calgarians and their families to check out!

For free or low-cost sports lessons for kids and teens 6-17, visit Sport Hub at calgary.ca/SportHubLessons. Looking for lawn care advice and tips? Have a look at calgary.ca/yardsmart!

Planning to enjoy a campfire with family and friends this Summer? Be sure to check for fire bans or advisories by visiting calgary.ca/safety/fire-bans. Additionally, you can visit calgary.ca/stormwater for actions you can take to reduce pollution entering our storm drains this Summer.

As we head into July, I want to wish everyone a Happy Canada Day as well as a fun Stampede Season. Yahoo!

Supporting Residents During Construction

Construction on Stage B of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main Replacement Project will continue throughout the Summer. Construction will span from 73 Street NW to 87 Street NW, with a possible extension to the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant. An open-cut method will be used.

I know construction can be disruptive and I am focused on ensuring residents have the support and information they need.

Resources are available at the Community Resource Centre at the Bowness Community Association. For questions, please email BSFMProject@calgary.ca.

Residents and businesses in Bowness along the feeder main alignment should anticipate more mail drop updates, construction notices and info sessions. Residents and businesses that have not already done so, can sign up to receive email updates.

Due to the accelerated pace of the BSFM project, construction details remain subject to change. For the most recent updates, please visit https://www.calgary.ca/planning/water/bearspaw-feeder-main/replacement-proj

Representing You at City Hall

I have been busy this past month representing you and the Ward 1 Community in Council.

I am excited to announce that I was elected by my colleagues to serve on the Chief Administrative Officer Recruitment and Appointment Sub-Committee. Selecting our CAO is one of the most important decisions this Council will make. We have had two meetings and the process is taking route.

At the Community Development Committee I voted against the City's request to approve their updated truck routes which included 112 Ave NW and Country Hills Blvd NW. For many years, gravel trucks travelling through the intersection have caused residents concern regarding loose gravel, pedestrian safety and traffic congestion.

Although the motion passed, I will continue to push the City to take action on the gravel truck issue at 112 Avenue NW and Country Hills Blvd NW. I am committed to working alongside the City and the Province to find a solution for this issue.

Listening to People in the Community

I welcomed over 100 people to my first community town hall on June 9th! Thank you to everyone who joined me and shared their feedback.

My team and I were also out door knocking in Bowness to gather feedback on the proposed flood bylaws that I sent back to administration for further community engagement.

These proposed bylaws and land use changes would heavily impact residents in Bowness. After hearing from residents, it is clear that better engagement is needed before this can move to the next stages.

I will continue to listen to Ward 1 residents and advocate for our communities. If you will be impacted by these flood bylaws, please consider filling out this short survey: https://forms.gle/ubfCEi4XW4rWfZgN8.

Representing Ward 1 and Our City

This month I have the honour of serving as Deputy Mayor. It is a privilege to represent Calgary and City Council and support the work happening across our city.

I brought remarks at the Team Canada Send-Off Soccer Match vs. Uzbekistan, hosted by the Calgary Minor Soccer’s Association ahead of the World Cup.

I also joined the Calgary Chinese Elderly Citizens’ Association for their Taste of Africa and China Experience Day, where we celebrated intercultural connection and marked a major milestone by opening a fascinating 25-year-old time capsule. The celebrations in Chinatown continued with the Sien Lok Society and the Calgary Chinatown Development Foundation, where we planted cherry blossom trees to symbolize the growth, renewal, and cultural preservation of Chinatown.

Finally, I gave remarks at Heritage Park for the 5th Annual Women Making History in Alberta Awards, celebrating the phenomenal trailblazers who continue to shape our province’s past, present, and future.

I am excited to continue serving as Deputy Mayor and representing Ward 1 across Calgary  throughout the rest of June.
