What’s Happening in Our City

Supporting Residents During Construction 

Construction on Stage B of the Bearspaw South Feeder Main (BSFM) Replacement Project is expected to continue through November 2026. More than 1 kilometre of the new steel feeder main has been installed, meaning 40% of stage B feeder main installation is now complete. 

The new replacement pipe will run from 73 Street N.W. to 89 Street N.W., where it will connect to the existing steel pipe leading to the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant. Extending the pipe to 89 Street N.W. helps avoid future construction and reduces future community disruptions. An open-cut method will be used. 

During construction, some trees and shrubs in and near the public right-of-way may be affected. The BSFM team conducted a detailed inventory and health assessment of all trees and shrubs ahead of construction.

Sidewalk Improvements are coming to 34th Avenue as part of the BSFM replacement project! Sidewalks along 34 Avenue NW between 73 Street and 89 Street will be widened from 1.2 metres to 1.5 metres. A short section between 73 Street and 77 Street will remain at its current 1.2-metre width to maintain consistency with the sidewalk on the opposite side of the street, which is not being reconstructed as part of this project. 

The wider sidewalks will improve accessibility and pedestrian safety while aligning with the standards used in newer communities. 

I know construction can be disruptive and I am focused on ensuring residents have the support and information they need.

In the Community

Throughout the first half of September, I have enjoyed getting out in the community and meeting residents from across Ward 1.

I attended Echo Calgary’s Hong Kong Culture Day event, Tasting Hong Kong, at the Confluence Historic Site and Parkland. This event showcased what it means to build bridges across cultures, share vibrant traditions, and embrace the diversity that makes Calgary a wonderful place to live. I have had the pleasure of attending this event for multiple years in a row and was particularly impressed to see how the festival has grown. 

It was wonderful to attend the announcement of the first Canadian Rockies Regional  Robotics competition that will be taking place at the STEM Innovation School near Varsity in 2027. This is the first time since 2019 that world-class high school robotics is returning to Alberta, and it is happening right here in Ward 1!

I also attended the 20th anniversary of the Silver Springs Botanical Gardens. These gardens are maintained completely by volunteers and are a beautiful gathering place in Ward 1. The gardens are an impressive reminder of what we can accomplish when the community comes together. 

Ward 1 Updates

There is a road closure at Bearspaw Dam Road NW between Rowley Gate NW and 87 Street NW. The construction being completed is to install a storm main to support work on Haskayne - Phase 2. The road is expected to reopen on September 30, 2026 at 7:00 AM.

Our office has heard concerns from Rockland Park residents about parking along Rowmont Blvd NW. The City of Calgary has conducted a parking pilot on the roadway.

No decisions regarding parking on this road have been made at this time. Mobility Operational Improvements will be observing conditions in the field to assess the concerns raised through recent 311 Calgary service requests. The team will document its findings and provide an update once the review is complete. 

I appreciate residents taking the time to share their feedback and concerns. 

There is a proposed temporary Fire Station coming to Rockland Park. The project is proposed to be constructed at 650 Rowmont Blvd NW. Once complete, the project will service the communities of Rockland Park and Haskayne, improving response times in these growing communities. The temporary station will be in place until a permanent station is built.

My team and I are continuing to knock on doors in Bowness to discuss with residents proposed changes to the city’s flood bylaws.These proposed bylaws and land use changes would heavily impact residents in Bowness.

As a result of my advocacy at the Infrastructure and Planning committee, city administration is conducting public engagement on proposed High Hazard Flood Fringe and Groundwater Flood Fringe regulations that would be included in the proposed flood bylaws. 

Public engagement will begin on September 28, 2026 and end October 11, 2026. The engagement approach includes targeted mail-outs, an online engagement portal, virtual information sessions, virtual engagement sessions and an in-person engagement session. The City of Calgary is currently conducting public engagement for the Bowwood Park Improvement Project to revitalize the greenspace located at Bowwood Drive NW and 66 Street NW with new recreation and gathering amenities.
