"Branching Out" returns in 2026 with more trees for Calgary

As Calgary continues to grow, so does the importance of building a healthy, resilient urban tree canopy. Programs like Branching Out play a meaningful role in shaping greener neighbourhoods and supporting long‑term environmental goals, while also giving residents a direct way to contribute.

In 2026, The City’s Branching Out tree partnership program is returning with its largest offering yet. This program helps increase Calgary’s tree canopy and supports the city’s long‑term goal of reaching 16 percent canopy coverage by 2060 by encouraging tree planting on private property across Calgary.

What to know about the 2026 Branching Out program

Due to strong interest in previous years, the number of trees available has doubled to 10,000 for 2026. Trees are offered on a first‑come, first‑served basis, and demand is expected to be high.

Registration will open by city quadrant throughout April. For northwest Calgary, registration opens on Tuesday, April 7 at 10 a.m. Registration for northeast Calgary opens April 14, southeast Calgary on April 21, and southwest Calgary on April 28. On the day registration opens for each quadrant, the online form will become available at calgary.ca/branchingout.

Residents may submit one registration per address and request up to two trees. Completing the Right Tree, Right Location online learning module is required before registering, although residents who have completed it in past years do not need to do so again.

Tree pick‑up details

Tree pick‑up will take place at two locations, depending on quadrant. North Calgary pick‑ups will be held at the Whitehorn Transit Station parking lot, and south Calgary pick‑ups will be at the Douglas Glen Transit Station parking lot. Pick‑ups are scheduled across late May and June, with specific dates and times provided in the registration confirmation.

Trees must be picked up during the assigned date and time. They will be provided in five‑gallon pots, with sizes varying by tree type. Free mulch will also be available on pick‑up days, and residents are encouraged to bring their own container.

Why Branching Out matters

Trees planted through Branching Out help cool neighbourhoods during summer heat, reduce erosion, improve air and water quality, support biodiversity, and create more welcoming streets and public spaces. Over time, they also contribute to stronger climate resilience and healthier communities.

More information, including registration details and species lists, is available at calgary.ca/branchingout.
