144 Avenue North BRT: What We Heard from Ward 2 Residents

Since 2024, we have been actively sharing information about the 144 Avenue North Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) Functional Planning Study, and encouraging Ward 2 residents to participate and make their voices heard. Many of you took the time to attend sessions, submit feedback, and share your lived experience of getting around north Calgary. This feedback is reflected in the Phase 3 What We Heard Report, and I’d like to sincerely thank participants for sharing your thoughtful input.

Throughout Phase 3, residents shared thoughtful and detailed feedback about mobility needs, daily travel challenges, and expectations for future transit service in our growing communities. Here are the key themes we heard throughout the engagement process:

Route coverage gaps in northern communities:
Many participants raised concerns that the proposed BRT does not adequately serve fast‑growing northern neighbourhoods. Residents emphasized the need for better stop locations or route adjustments to ensure communities such as Glacier Ridge, Ambleton, Evanston, and Livingston are meaningfully connected.

Strong support for the proposed route:
At the same time, there was broad support for the recommended alignment. Residents felt that improved transit along 144 Avenue is much needed and urged The City to move forward with implementation without unnecessary delays.

Faster and better‑connected transit:
Feedback highlighted the importance of improving travel times and strengthening connections to major transit lines and existing routes. Residents asked for clearer explanations around routing decisions and how the BRT will connect with the broader transit network.

More direct and express options:
Many participants called for more direct or express service, particularly for trips to downtown and schools. Among these priorities reducing transfers, shortening walking distances, and improving overall commute reliability for people of all ages.

What Happens Next

The project team will continue refining the functional plan using the feedback received during Phase 3. The final Functional Planning Study is expected to be shared publicly this spring.

I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to engage in this valuable process. Meaningful transit planning depends on real input from riders who use these routes every day. My office will continue to share updates and advocate for transit solutions that reflect the reality of growth in Ward 2 and the needs of the communities that call north Calgary home.
