2026 Compost Giveaway: What You Need to Know

This spring, the City of Calgary is once again offering complimentary compost to residents as part of its annual compost giveaway. The program is a great opportunity to improve the health of your yard or garden while supporting waste reduction through the green cart program.

The compost provided through the giveaway is made from food scraps and yard waste collected from Calgary homes. When used properly, compost helps improve soil structure, retain moisture, and support healthier plant growth. A small amount goes a long way, and it should always be mixed into existing soil rather than used as a replacement.

How much compost can you get?

Each household is eligible to pick up compost once during the 2026 giveaway, with a maximum limit of 100 litres per household. Quantities are capped to ensure the program remains accessible to as many residents as possible.

Where and when to pick up compost

Compost will be available by appointment only from April 13 to May 30 at two City landfill locations:

  • Spyhill Landfill (North)
  • Shepard Landfill (South)

An appointment is required to pick up compost, and residents must book in advance.

Online booking opens on March 31, with appointment slots released in stages:

  • April 13 to May 2 pickup dates open for booking on March 31
  • May 4 to May 16 pickup dates open for booking on April 28
  • May 18 to May 30 pickup dates open for booking on May 12

Appointments are first come, first served, so booking early is recommended.

Compost for community groups

In addition to the residential giveaway, the City is also offering complimentary Category A compost and mulch to community gardens, community associations, schools, and other community groups. Groups interested in accessing compost for community use can call 311 and request compost through the City.
