Green Cart Collection Switching to Biweekly in November
Dear Ward 2 residents,
As we head into the colder months, green cart pickup will shift to the winter schedule. Starting the first week of November, collection will happen every other week instead of weekly. This is a seasonal change — weekly pickup will return in April once yard waste starts piling up again.
You can always check your updated schedule, sign up for reminders, or download the Calgary Garbage Day app at calgary.ca/cartschedule.
Why this change happens
I hear from residents every year asking why The City moves to biweekly pickup. The short answer is — once the ground freezes and yard work slows down, the amount of organic waste drops quite a bit. Switching to an every-other-week schedule keeps the program cost-effective without changing your monthly fee. The cost of this seasonal adjustment is already averaged into the green cart rate, so you’re not paying extra when pickups are more frequent in spring and summer.
If your cart is full
If you still have extra yard waste this fall, here are your options:
- Place extra material in paper yard waste bags for pickup.
- Request an additional green cart for a small fee.
- Drop off yard waste at any City Eco Centre for composting.
The Fall Yard Waste Drop-Off Program runs until Saturday, November 1, giving you a free and easy way to get rid of any remaining leaves or branches.
And one quick reminder — as snow arrives, please keep your carts accessible and clear of snowbanks so crews can collect safely and stay on schedule.
