Ward 2 - Jennifer Wyness

Have Your Say on the Future of Calgary’s Downtown Free Fare Zone

Many people in Ward 2 rely on Calgary Transit and the CTrain every day to get to work, school, and other appointments. Calgary Transit is currently seeking public input as part of a review of the Free Fare Zone, and we are asking Ward 2 residents to share your feedback.

From now until March 8, 2026, Calgary Transit is conducting customer research focused on the Free Fare Zone. This is the section of the CTrain network that runs through downtown along 7 Avenue, between Downtown West–Kerby Station and City Hall–Bow Valley College Station.

Why is this Review Happening?

The Free Fare Zone has been in place since 1981, and Calgary has changed significantly since then. Population growth, travel patterns, funding pressures, and the location of major destinations have all evolved, creating new priorities for how transit is delivered and funded.

Calgary Transit is reviewing the Free Fare Zone as part of a broader look at fares and fare policy to ensure the system continues to meet the needs of Calgarians today and into the future. This work aligns with RouteAhead, Calgary Transit’s 30‑year strategic plan.

What Will Happen with the Feedback?

Input gathered through this survey will be combined with:

  • Information on how people currently use the Free Fare Zone
  • Analysis of practices in other cities
  • Internal engagement and operational data
  • Strategic alignment with RouteAhead

Together, this information will be used to assess the value of the Free Fare Zone and to develop recommendations for its future. These recommendations will be included in an updated Fare Revenue Policy, which will guide Calgary Transit’s overall fare system and fare products. Additional customer research related to fare policy is expected to begin later in March 2026.

Is the Free Fare Zone being Removed?

Right now, no decisions have been made.

Any changes to the Free Fare Zone would be considered by City Council following a thorough review. The results of this survey will be one of several factors Council considers when discussing the future of the Free Fare Zone.

Has the End of the TD Naming Agreement Affected the Zone?

No. The Free Fare Zone was not funded by the TD naming rights agreement, and TD Bank’s withdrawal from that agreement has not affected the Zone’s funding.
