Improving Safety at 144 Avenue and Evanston Hill/Ambleton Street
Over the past few months, many residents from Evanston and Ambleton have contacted my office with serious concerns about the intersection at 144 Avenue and Evanston Hill/ Ambleton Street. I have heard from parents who walk this route with their children, drivers who have experienced close calls, and neighbours who have witnessed collisions. I want to thank everyone who has taken the time to reach out, because your voices help push safety improvements forward.
My office has been meeting with Mobility to keep this location on their radar and to understand what steps are underway. The City has now provided updated information that I want to share publicly so residents know what has happened to date and what is planned next.
Recent Actions
A temporary Rectangular Rapid Flashing Beacon (RRFB) was activated at this location on November 17. This is an interim measure that provides added visibility for the crosswalk while longer-term upgrades are designed.
Mobility has also confirmed that a permanent traffic signal is now in the design phase. Based on current timelines, the signal is expected to be operational in the third or fourth quarter of 2026. I recognize that residents were hoping for a shorter timeline. My office will continue to push for opportunities to accelerate the work wherever possible.
Collision History
Many of you have asked for transparency about the safety record at this intersection. Mobility has provided the collision summary here.
This report includes:
- Development and operational history
- Collision diagram between 2016 – 2025
- Number of accidents with minor injuries versus property damage only
- Vehicle and pedestrian volume counts
My Commitment Going Forward
This intersection has been a priority for me because residents have been clear about the risks they experience daily. I will continue to work with Mobility and CPS to keep this location moving through the process. I will also continue to advocate for improvements that reflect the reality of growth in Evanston and Ambleton and the traffic volumes that come with it.
Thank you again to everyone who has spoken up and reported concerns. Your reports and your advocacy are making a real difference. If you have additional questions or would like to share your experience at this location, please reach out to my office at ward2@calgary.ca.
