Happy Stampede, Ward 2!
As Calgary comes alive with cowboy hats, pancakes, and community spirit, I want to take a moment to wish you and your family a safe and joyful Stampede season. This is always an exciting time of the year—when we come together to celebrate the best of our city and connect with neighbours from all walks of life.
In between enjoying the festivities, I also want to share some exciting progress on a long-awaited project in our northwest communities:
Progress Update: Symons Valley Centre and Sage Hill Library
Exciting progress is underway on the long-anticipated Symons Valley Centre project, which will bring much-needed amenities to Calgary’s northwest. Located at 251 Sage Hill Boulevard N.W., this seven-acre, City-owned site is being developed in five phases and will primarily serve the communities of Kincora, Sherwood, Sage Hill, Nolan Hill, and Evanston.
The project — a new 15,000 sq. ft. permanent Sage Hill Library, a community commons green space, and a new main street — is moving forward with design and permitting well underway. A Development Permit application has now been submitted, marking a major milestone in the planning process.
We’re also seeing acceleration on the deep utility infrastructure work, which is now expected to begin in Q3 of 2025.
Construction Timeline:
- Phase 1 (2025): Deep utility construction begins Q3-2025, ahead of earlier timelines.
- Phase 2 (2026 – mid-2028): Construction of the library, community commons, and main street access.
- Phases 3 & 4 (2026): Land sales for non-market housing and future mixed-use retail opportunities.
- Phase 5 (Beyond 2030): Final planning for a Calgary Transit terminal and Park & Ride facility.
What This Means for Our Community:
- A modern, full-service library to replace the current temporary Sage Hill location;
- A new green space for walking, gathering, and outdoor events;
- Retail and services to support daily needs and reduce travel for local residents; and
- A more connected main street with improved access, walkability, and parking.
This project has been a long time coming, and it’s encouraging to see momentum building. We’ll continue to share updates as construction progresses and more phases move forward.
