May Newsletter, 2026

As we head into May, I wanted to share a few helpful reminders and resources that may be useful for you or your family. This month’s update includes information on Neighbour Day, and how to plan your summer garden using the tools available to you.

Plan a Neighbour Day event in your community!

Neighbour Day is happening on Saturday, June 20, 2026 and it’s the perfect time to bring your community together. Neighbour Day helps build welcoming and inclusive communities where neighbours connect and feel a sense of belonging all year long.
Get involved by hosting a block party, BBQ or neighbourhood gathering. Permits for block parties and greenspaces are free, so apply now.
Want more neighbours to join the fun? Add your event to The City’s Neighbour Day calendar and help others discover celebrations near them.

Spring gardening tips for a beautiful yard

The City of Calgary’s YardSmart program offers free, local gardening advice from the Calgary Horticultural Society to help yards thrive in our climate.

One of the most important steps is starting with good soil. Adding quality soil and compost helps support healthy lawns and gardens, and replacing a small portion of turf with a garden bed can help your yard stay vibrant longer while using water more efficiently. This spring, residents can also take advantage of the City’s compost giveaway, which provides free compost made from Green Cart materials. Details and booking information are available at calgary.ca/compost

When planning a garden, design with water use in mind by directing downspouts toward tree wells or garden beds and grouping plants with similar needs together. Choosing plants suited to Calgary’s climate, adding mulch to reduce evaporation, and watering wisely during establishment all support long‑term growth.

As always, my office is open if you have any questions or concerns. You can reach us at Ward2@Calgary.ca. I look forward to hearing from you soon.
