Noise Barrier Program Update for Ward 2

I am writing to share some news and updates about The City of Calgary’s Noise Barrier Program, which will help make our neighbourhoods quieter and more comfortable for everyone. Many of you have written to our office for more information about what is currently planned in Ward 2, so read on to learn more. Construction on new and existing city-owned noise barriers started in 2025 and will keep going into 2026.

What is the Noise Barrier Program?

The Noise Barrier Program is a citizen-led initiative. Residents who live next to eligible roadways can request a noise assessment at their property. If noise levels exceed City criteria, the location is added to a prioritized list for new noise barrier construction. The program also includes the repair and replacement of existing City-owned noise barriers that have reached the end of their service life.

You can read more about how The City determines when and where to build barriers, and how to request one for your community here.

New Noise Barriers

Seven locations on the City’s priority list are scheduled to receive new noise barriers by the end of 2026. Construction began at two locations in 2025, with work at the remaining five locations starting this year. Any locations still on the priority list after 2026 will be carried forward into the 2027–2030 budget cycle and re-prioritized alongside newly identified sites.

You can track the status of new noise barrier projects here.

Replacement Noise Barriers

All nine noise barrier replacement projects funded through the 2023–2026 budget cycle are expected to be completed in 2026. Three projects began construction in 2025, including one that was completed the same year. Two additional projects are scheduled to wrap up in spring 2026.

Project updates are available here.

Ward 2 Update

In Ward 2, work is underway along Shaganappi Trail N.W. (south of Sherwood Gate N.W. to north of Kincora Gate N.W.), and construction on a new noise barrier will begin this spring. Part of this work will include removing and rebuilding the two community feature walls located at Sherwood Gate N.W.

What to expect

The existing stone and stucco wall structure behind the entrance sign will be demolished, and crews will be taking precautions to preserve the existing Sherwood community lettering and branding so it can be reused in the new wall structures. City Administration hopes to reuse and refurbish some materials where possible and will dispose of any non-reusable materials responsibly.

Following the demolition, construction will begin on the new noise barrier, including on the attached feature walls. Reinstalling the lettering and branding to the structures will be one of our final steps once construction at this location is nearly complete, which we expect before the end of 2026.

Community feature wall design

Below is a rendering of the new design, which was put together for visual and conceptual purposes only and may be subject to change. Note that it depicts a brand-new sign with vibrant elements that may not accurately reflect the existing condition of the materials that will be reused.
