These activities will help youth build a positive view of themselves and recognize their strengths while thinking about media. They can be done alone or with friends over a video chat such as Skype, Zoom, Facetime, etc.

Strike a Pose

Pull out your invisible camera (or use a real one) and take pretend photos of your child making different poses that show an emotion or attitude.

Here are some examples to get you started:

  • Confident
  • Caring
  • Angry
  • Greedy
  • Surprised
  • Confused
  • In love
  • Terrified
  • Sassy
  • Serious

Next, give your child a chance to take pretend photos of you. Let them tell you what emotions or attitudes you should show in your poses.

My Fantastic Face

Supplies:

  • magazines
  • newspaper
  • cardboard
  • scissors
  • glue
  • coloured paper
  • pencils/crayons
  • paint
  • fabric

Have your child use different materials to draw and cut out the shapes of their facial features. They can look in the mirror while they draw.

Ask them: What do you like about your face? What do you want to make stand out in this project? Have them glue their favourite features on top of a piece of coloured paper (leave a ¼ inch border of coloured paper).

Have your child move the shapes around and decide how want to arrange them to represent who they are. Glue the shapes on top of another kind of paper like news paper, magazines or anything you can find.

Help your child draw the shape of their head. Have them use paint/markers/crayons for the colour of their skin and hair and add names or phrases that define them in their portrait.

Self-biography for Radio Show

Watch the video for help on this activity.

Supplies:

  • recording device (cellphone or computer)
  • paper
  • pencil/pen

Tell your child to write a 4-8 sentence paragraph about themselves. It can be the story of their life, who they are, what defines them, important moments in their life, goals or dreams.

Imagine this paragraph being read in a radio show. How would it sound?

Have your child practice reading it out loud a couple of times. Look for ideas by listening to different radio stations and programs.

Use a recording device (cellphone, computer, old recorder) and record their story. If you’d like, save this recording and listen to it again in year. Do you think it will change in a year?

  • How do you think media affects us?
  • How can we use media in a positive way?
