These activities can be done alone, but work best with one or more friends on a video chat like Skype, Zoom, Facetime, etc.

Mindfulness activity

Trivia question: What job do I have? I deliver mail and packages all around the city?

Mindfulness activity:

 

  • Put your palms together at chest height. 
  • Push your palms against each other as hard as you can. 
  • Which muscle gets tired first?

 

My future collage

Supplies:

  • Magazines
  • Newspapers
  • Scissors
  • Markers
  • Crayons
  • Glue

Description:

Think about what you want your future to look like. Cut out images from magazines or newspapers that make you think of your future, and glue the images to a piece of paper. Make a collage of all the different things you would like to be part of your life and decorate your collage creatively. Share with friends and family!

Pieces of my heart

Supplies:

  • Paper
  • Crayons
  • Scissors

Description:

  • Draw a heart and add puzzle pieces to the heart. Place a clean piece of paper on top and trace the original heart and puzzle pieces
  • On the first heart draw the things that you are good at and that you value
  • On the second heart -draw who you want to be in the future and qualities and skills that you would like to improve on
  • Cut up the pieces and mix and match the two hearts together – now you can see how what you’re already good at fits in with your future goals!

Summer goal thermometer

Supplies:

  • Large Piece of Paper
  • Markers

Directions:

  • Draw a large thermometer onto a large piece of paper
  • Decide as a family what your goals will be for the summer
  • Decide on a reward for when you reach specific milestones
  • Fill in the thermometer as you reach each goal to keep you on track
  • Some examples might be: play outside every day, complete weekly chores, or care for the garden.

  • What types of feelings come up with you think about your future? How about, how do you feel when you have reached a goal on your thermometer? (Feel)
  • Do you think that talking about your future is important? (Think)
  • What other types of planning activities can you do that relate to your future goals? (Act)

Mindfulness activity

Question: True or false: Trees that keep their leaves in the winter are called evergreen

Mindfulness activity:

  • Find your pulse on your neck or your wrist.
  • Use a timer or have someone count for you as you count your pulse for 15 seconds.
  • How many beats did you count? If you multiply that number by 4, that’s how many times your heart beats in a minute. That’s your heart rate.

Family bucket list

Supplies:

  • White paper
  • Markers

A bucket list is a list of things you want to do in the future. In this activity, you and your family will create a one year bucket list.

  1. Get your family together and start brainstorming. Ask your family what they would like to do, experience or achieve over the next year as a family.
  2. Write down all the ideas and once you're done brainstorming, put this list up somewhere where everyone can see it.
  3. For items that are not completed during the year, ask your family: Have our goals changed? Do we still want to accomplish them? How can we do it?

What would you do if…

Supplies:

  • Blank paper
  • Pen or pencil
  • Jar or cup

Directions:

Write down interesting "What if…" questions or use the ones we suggest below. Cut each question out and put them all inside a jar or cup. Gather the people who live in your house and take turns selecting a question from the jar.

  • What would you do if you won the lottery tomorrow?
  • What kind of activities would you do if you lived by the beach?
  • If you were given one superpower, what would it be?
  • What would you do if you had wings?
  • Where would you go if you could teleport yourself?
  • What planet would you like to visit?
  • What would you tell your 30-year-old self?
  • What would you tell your 60-year-old self?
  • What is your biggest dream?
  • If you found a genie and could ask for three wishes, what would you wish for?
  • What is one thing you would change about the world?
  • What is one thing you can't live without?
  • What is most important for you? Why?

When I grow up

Do you know what do you want to be when you grow up? There are many jobs a person can do and they are all important. For this activity, interview 3 adults about their job. You can interview your parents, call a family friend, or talk to a neighbour or family member.

After finishing the interviews, think about what are some of the things you learned you did not know before and how this new information will influence you on choosing your future job/profession.

These are some of the questions you can ask:

  1. What is your job/profession?
  2. How long have you had this job/profession?
  3. What do you like the most about your job?
  4. What is the hardest part of your job?
  5. What skills do you need to be successful at your type of job/profession?
  6. When you were a kid, what did you want to be when you grew up?

  • Imagine that your pointer finger is a candle.
  • Hold up your candle, take a deep breath in, and then blow out the candle on your finger for as long as you can.
  • Notice how your breath fills up your belly when you breathe in.

Because of the current social distancing rules it is difficult to enjoy the places we use to go to. Let's make a list of the top 5 places we would like to go when we are able to travel again.

Write down your list of places and give a reason to what you miss the most about this place. Examples could be your favourite restaurant, seeing your friends at the mall, or going to the mountains with your family.

Share this list with someone you live with, or with a friend over video chat.

ABC careers activity

Supplies:

  • Paper
  • Pencil

Directions:

  • Use your sheet of paper and list the letters of the alphabet, from A-Z.
  • Come up with jobs/careers that start with each alphabet letter.
  • Think of one skill that you possess that could be used in each career. For example, N – Nurse. I am compassionate.

This activity will help you explore new occupations that you may have never explored.

Brainstorm a list of 10-15 jobs that interest you. Think about the job that you would enjoy most and what kind of skills and experiences you have that may help you land this job. Let's create a poster and draw out the skills you have to highlight all of your employability skills. This will help you identify skills that could help you ace an interview and succeed in a job. Keep the poster to help you build your resume in the future.
