The City asks Calgarians and surrounding communities to conserve water as crews work on the water main break. Alberta Health Services (AHS) declared a Boil Water Advisory for portions of Parkdale, Montgomery, West Hillhurst, and Point McKay communities.
The city remains under Stage 4 water restrictions and efforts conserving water must continue. We are focused on ensuring plans are in place for Monday’s commute.
Today's water use exceeded sustainable levels, which is straining our system. Calgarians are reminded about the need to conserve water as routines resume on Monday. Keeping consumption low during repairs is critical to maintain storage for drinking water and essential services like emergency response and firefighting.
Crews continue making steady progress. The affected piece of the pipe has been excavated, cut and removed. A single eastbound land on 16 Ave. N.W., east of Sarcee Tr. N.W. has been reopened. Calgarians may see some hydrant-flushing in the area of 52 St. and Memorial Dr. S.E.
The City urges everyone to use less water now as high demand for the 2nd day in a row threatens emergency readiness as repairs continue. Bowness will see temporary water shutoffs for 30 homes and one business starting Wednesday for two days to allow inspections.
Crews have removed and replaced the damaged section of the Bearspaw feeder main, with welding complete and backfilling now underway, while Stage 4 water restrictions remain in effect during the careful, multi‑day process to refill, test, and stabilize the system. Continued water conservation is critical as the City manages pressure and mitigates risk of additional breaks.
Repair work on the broken pipe is progressing well. The damaged section has been removed, and the new pipe is now in place and welded. Crews are backfilling the area and will then start repairing the road above the pipe once we complete all the critical steps to restore water service.
The City continues to make progress on repairs to the water main break along 16 Avenue N.W. Today, teams are continuing to fill the pipe, with the next steps involving water quality testing and ensuring the system is fully stable.
Crews are collecting water samples to confirm our water meets or exceeds drinking water standards set by Alberta Health Services and Alberta Environment and Protected Areas. Once testing confirms the water is safe, crews will begin refilling the pipe. Increasing flow carries risk, and the system is being closely monitored throughout this stage. The focus remains on returning the pipe to service as quickly and safely as possible
The final pump is scheduled to be activated on Friday morning if the pipe continues to remain stable. It takes about 24 hours to stabilize the system before advancing to each subsequent phase.
This morning, the final pump at the Bearspaw Water Treatment Plant was activated, increasing flow through the feeder main. The system remains stable based on ongoing monitoring. All water restrictions are now lifted, effective immediately.
