What is ISO 14001?

ISO 14001 is an international standard for environmental management. It provides a framework for the development of an environmental system and a supporting audit program. The standards are developed by the International Organization for Standardization and are recognized and implemented worldwide. Organizations can register a system that meets this standard using third-party verification. Learn more about ISO 14001.

Why is The City using ISO 14001?

The program provides third-party audits to evaluate our environmental management system (EnviroSystem), raising the environmental standards within civic operations above the requirements of regulatory bodies. At the most basic level, ISO 14001 provides a management philosophy that makes environmental considerations part of every operational decision.

Is there an economic value to ISO 14001?

Yes! The program makes it possible for The City of Calgary to conserve resources, reduce waste and to be more productive. It gives our employees the knowledge they need to eliminate incidents of non-compliance to environmental legislation and minimize environmental impact. It also helps to ensure that the best solution is reached from an economic, social and environmental standpoint over the entire lifecycle of a project.

Does the program impact citizens?

The program allows The City of Calgary to better conserve resources, prevent pollution and comply with applicable environmental legislation. The most direct benefit to citizens is reduced City operating costs and a cleaner, natural environment. Also, as an environmental leader, The City will set an example for all Calgarians and other organizations by encouraging them to be environmentally responsible.

Are there some examples of ISO 14001 in use?

Examples of changes resulting from the environmental management system (EnviroSystem) and ISO 14001 include the following:

  • Improved fuel management
  • Reduced consumption and waste generation
  • Green facilities
  • The purchase of environmentally-friendly products and services

ISO 14001 also drives the development of policies and plans meant to assess and clean up contamination on any City-owned property, and all potential new land purchases by the City are screened for potential contamination. Another example is the implementation of best practices during construction projects along waterways in order to minimize the impact of erosion and silt on fish habitat.
