West Runway Rehabilitation Project

Organization: Calgary International Airport (YYC)

Project description

Runway 17R-35L (the west runway) is YYC’s oldest active runway. Built between 1956 and 1963 for smaller, lighter aircraft, it has been repaired many times to stay safe. A reliable runway keeps travellers, visitors and goods moving — supporting families, local jobs and Calgary’s economy.

The West Runway Rehabilitation Project (WRRP) will extend the runway’s life and keep it safe and efficient for decades to come. Work includes:

  • Full-depth structural and electrical repairs to the runway
  • Taxiway improvements
  • Relocating vehicle service roads
  • Upgraded lighting and electrical systems
  • Drainage fixes and upgrades to current design standards
  • Measures to improve climate resilience

The project targets Envision sustainable infrastructure certification and focuses on reducing emissions and improving resiliency.

Benefit to Calgarians

The renewed west runway will improve safety and efficiency, accommodate modern aircraft and handle more travellers and cargo in the future. Construction is creating about 300 jobs across multiple industries. YYC is working with partners to meet community needs.

Using the Envision Framework helps YYC design, build and operate the project with sustainability in mind. This runway will support tourism, commerce and economic activity in Calgary — so trips run smoothly and local businesses can reach customers and markets.

Climate impact

YYC is using several measures to reduce environmental impacts, including:

  • Reusing stormwater
  • Using concrete with carbon entrapment technology
  • Upgrading to LED lighting to reduce power use
  • Improving the stormwater system for climate resilience

The project aims to reuse 80 per cent of existing materials and follows YYC’s sustainability commitments such as its Anti-Idling Policy.

Innovation and inclusion

YYC has shared information and gathered input through media updates and four in-person community sessions in different parts of the city. YYC and community members discuss updates and concerns at the Airport Community Consultative Committee each quarter. Members include community associations, airlines, municipal and federal representatives, NAV CANADA and The Calgary Airport Authority.

This engagement approach brings diverse perspectives to the table and supports inclusive decision-making as work progresses.
