Calgary Built: The Green Line LRT – Episode 4: Geotechnical Drilling

Geotechnical drilling is a critical process in the early work delivery of major infrastructure projects.

For the elevated sections of the Green Line LRT alignment, bridges need to be built, and to design a bridge that’s safe and structurally sound, engineers need to know exactly what’s beneath the surface.

That’s where geotechnical drilling comes in.

This investigative process used to analyze ground conditions is essential work and provides critical information about the strength of the ground and its ability to support heavy structures.

WSP, as Prime Contractor for the geotechnical investigation and laboratory testing, engaged Core Drilling to complete a portion of the geotechnical program for Green Line, which included over 170 holes at various places across the alignment.

Geotechnical drilling is more than just a technical process — it’s an investment that can save millions of dollars in construction costs. By understanding the soil and bedrock conditions upfront, we reduce risk and ensure each bridge is built on a solid foundation.
